Lady Blackhawks end season with a 22-run bang
WALTON – The Lady Blackhawks jumped out to a big 12-0 lead by the intermission of the third inning. Between the fourth and fifth innings, Oxford tacked on another 10 runs to defeat the host Walton Warriors on the road, 22-5 for the final game of the 2018 season.
Oxford’s Allison Beckwith did the damage on both sides of the ball as she pitched the full seven inning and went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in four RBIs for the day.
Beckwtih kicked off the Blackhawks’ scoring round in the top half of the first inning when she sent a deep fly ball to center field. With Karley Miller on third due to a passed ball and a stolen second base by Destiny Oralls, Beckwith scored both runners with the hit, making the score 2-0 after the fourth batter of the game.
Later in the inning, the bases were loaded when Lilliana Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. Beckwith crossed the plate for the third run scored by the Oxford of the inning.
Oxford then tallied five in the second and added another four runs in the third. The Blackhawks’ offense produced their biggest inning in the fourth when they scored nine, making the score 21-3.
Scoring one more in the top half of the fifth, the visiting team was able to record at least one run in each of the five innings played.
Walton added two runs to their total in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn’t enough to prevent the mercy rule from coming into effect, ending the game two innings earlier than the usual seven.
Beckwith completed the game in the circle fo the Blackhawks, allowing three hits and zero earned runs. She struck out 13 Warrior batters.
Oxford’s Caitlyn Quigley also had a three-hit day, finishing 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Her teammate Hannah Ryan recorded a three RBI day while Karley Miller used her at-bats to draw three walks.
As a team, the Blackhawks finished the day with a total of 10 hits, 15 RBIs and 11 walks.
Oxford finishes their 2018 season with a record of 4-9.
