Marauders baseball lose a tough seven inning bout with Canastota
SHERBURNE – In a battle throughout the game, Sherburne-Earlville had one bad inning defensively, and it made all the difference in Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Canastota.
Both team were scoreless through the first two innings when the Raiders faced the top half of the third, hoping to get some sort of offense going.
They were able to do just that.
With two hits in the inning – the only two that S-E’s starter Cody Beckwith surrendered the entire game – and a few defensive miscues by the Marauders, Canastota put the first two runs up on the scoreboard.
Sherburne-Earlville was able to get out of the inning, stopping any more damage from happening.
In the bottom of the fifth, S-E tacked on their first run of the game, cutting the Radiers lead in half. Unfortunately, the Marauders were unable to muster up any more runs, losing to Canastota.
“It was a great ballgame,” said Sherburne-Earlville Head Coach Jay Tackabury. “We just came up on the wrong end of the scoreboard.”
“Our defense had one bad inning where we gave Canastota their two runs and it turned out to be the difference in the ballgame,” Tackabury said. “But, the team as a whole gave a great effort, everyone was into the game mentally. Overall, we played good baseball.”
Beckwith pitched the full seen innings of the game and struck out six batters while allowing just the two hits in the third.
Before the contest was played, Tackabury honored his seniors. The group played their final home game of their high school career.
“I’m so proud of our seniors and the young men they are,” said Tackabury. “They represent themselves, S-E, and the entire community with class. They are young men everyone in the district should be proud of. I’m proud to have coached this group of young men.”
Sherburne-Earlville will travel to Bishop Ludden Monday for the first round of the Section III Class C tournament. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start time. If the Marauders win, they will play the following day against the top-seeded Pulaski on the road at 5 p.m.
