Rams end Afton’s season with walk-off single in final at-bat
KORTRIGHT – On a 2-2 count in the bottom of the seventh, South Kortright’s Conor Woznick lined a shot to center field. His teammate Chris Champlin was already running towards home to score the game-winning run. The walk-off hit by Woznick left Afton on the wrong end of a 7-6 loss to Rams of South Kortright on Monday.
The game was tied at 6-6 with and the Rams were down to their final out as Afton’s Colin Nabinger picked up two strikeouts on the first two batter faced in the inning. Champlin, however, hit the ball to the Crimson Knights’ shortstop and reach on an error.
The next batter for South Kortright was Derek Burns. He drew a walk off Nabinger, giving the Rams two runners for Woznick.
South Kortright took the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second off but Afton answered one inning later with three runs of their own, taking a one run lead.
The Crimson Knight lead came because of Tyler King’s line drive single to center field, scoring Damion Relyea and Zack Alford. In the at-bat before, Relyea sent a shot to center field, scoring Brody Oleksak from second.
The Rams took the lead back with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, making the score 6-3.
In the fourth, Afton tacked on another run, cutting the lead down to two runs. As the Crimson Knights held South Kortright scoreless in the bottom of the inning, Afton added another two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.
Afton recorded 13 hits in the game while South Kortright only had six. Eight of the Crimson Knights hits came off the Rams starter Kenton Pickett.
Relyea led the Crimson Knight offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. King ended his day hitting 2-for-4 with a double and teammate Antonio Derrigo recorded the other double for the Knights, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Vince Caiati also had two hits in the game.
Pickett pitched four and a third innings and was relieved by Logan Kaufman in the fifth, who picked up the win for South Kortright.
Afton’s starter on the mound was Brody Oleksak. He lasted three innings before Nabinger came on to finish the game. Nabinger was recorded the loss due to the walk-off hit by Woznick. The two Crimson Knight pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed the six hits by the Rams.
Woznick, who also hit a home in the third inning for South Kortright, finished the afternoon going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. His teammate, Patrick Demming also hit a home run. Demming’s hit a two-run shot came in the second.
Afton ends their 2018 season with an overall record of 11-5.
