Council appoints Papelino as Norwich Fire Chief
NORWICH – The City of Norwich Common Council appointed First Assistant Fire Chief Jan Papelino as the new fire chief at its regular meeting on Tuesday evening.
Effective June 4, Papelino will be sworn-in as Norwich Fire Chief after his appointment was unanimously approved by the council Tuesday.
Papelino is a 39-year employee and volunteer of the fire department. He will succeed retired Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo.
Speaking to Papelino, Alderman Ward 1 Matthew Caldwell said, "I got to be honest, I thought it would be easier to find the next fire––it was actually pretty hard.
"I think we had some great candidates and for that reason I'm really excited that you'll be our next fire chief, I think you'll do a fantastic job. You bring a wealth of knowledge and experience."
City of Norwich Mayor Christine Carnrike added that she will officially swear Papelino in on June 4 before a public swearing-in ceremony takes place at the city's joint committees meeting on June 5.
She seconded Caldwell's comments, and said, "We knew the task in front of us and we spent a great deal of time with the candidates, and I think this council discerned very well and made the best decision for the City of Norwich at this time."
