Marauders come up short, eliminated by No.1 Pulaski
PULASKI – The Marauders lost a tough battle on the diamond against the top seed of Class C baseball, the Pulaski Devils, 5-2 on Wednesday.
While Sherburne-Earlville had the opportunities in the first two innings, no base runners were able to score before the third out was recorded.
The Devils added the first run of the game to the scoreboard, scoring one in the bottom of the first inning.
Two at-bats later, Pulaski tallied another four runs, making the score 5-0.
With a lot of baseball left to be played, the Marauders stepped the plate with hopes of a hitting rally.
However, S-E was unable to score in the fourth and slowly started to run out of time.
In the fifth, Sherburne-Earlville tacked on their first run of the game. Once again in the seventh, the Marauders added another run when Gabe Irwin had a sacrifice fly, sending teammate Vinny Albertina across home plate.
But that was all they were able to muster up, ending their 2018 season earlier than the team wanted.
“It was a tough game,” said Jay Tackabury, S-E’s head coach. “We had opportunities on offense to score runs in the first and second innings. We simply left too many men in scoring position to win a sectional game against a number one seed.
“I’m proud of the effort, but we just came up short tonight.”
Irwin, Mitch Doing and Cody Beckwith had a hit each for the Marauders. Doing’s hit was a recorded as double.
Irwin started on the hill for S-E and surrendered five hits while striking out five in fu innings of work. Dawson Lagoe came on in relief for the final two innings.
Sherburne-Earlville ends their season with a final record of 7-11.
