Tornado boys track and field repeat as Class B champions; Norwich girls crowned as runner-up

JOHNSON CITY – Taking the same path they did one year ago, the Norwich Purple Tornado boys track and field team claimed the Section IV Class B crown. The girls squad finished in second place behind the Golden Bears of Vestal.

The Lady Golden Bears have the fastest girls’ sprinter in the state for Division-II on their team––stiff competition for Norwich to beat. The Norwich girls who faced her gave it everything they had when racing with her.

The Purple Tornado’s Zack Race once again won two individual events – the 100 and 200 meter dashes – and was a leg of the winning 4x100 meter team.

Race, David Berger, Scott Tomanocy and Eric Conant sprinted their legs off at the event to clock a time of 43.82 seconds. The foursome has been untouchable this season, winning in every meet they have competed.

Another group that has been nearly untouchable for Norwich is the 4x400 meter relay team. After setting the school record a week ago at the STAC Championships, the runners of Nik Barber, Noah Bufalini, Tomanocy, and Gabe Gawronski.

Gawronski took home the Class B crown in the 400 meter dash, sprinting the one lap to a time of 50.91 seconds.

His kid sister, Katie Gawronski also brought home bragging rights. Her event was the 400 meter hurdles, an event where Gawronski finished as the STAC Championships runner-up.

Taking one lap around the track without the hurdles was Norwich’s Hailey Colabelli. Colabelli’s time of 1:01.96 was a second faster than a week ago and was the best time in the Class B race, sending her home with a Section IV title.

Running a time of 2:25.58 for the 800 meter run was the Tornado’s Nicole Jeffrey. Jeffrey took home first place and was just one second off from setting a new school record. She also placed fourth in the 1500 meter run earlier in the meet.

On the boys side of the same event, Gabe Gawronski took a third place finish and added more team points to Norwich’s total.

The Purple Tornado earned big team points with the results of the 200 meter dash finals for the boys. Norwich crossed the first three runners of the race. Race finished first with Eric Conant and David Berger coming in right after. The three earned Norwich a total of 24 points as they swept the top three spots on the podium.

The 4x800 meter Tornado girls team was the first to place in the afternoon of events as they grabbed second in the event with their time of 10:16.25.

Norwich’s 4x100 meter girls team also raced to a second place finish. Delilah Geislinger, Riley Marsh, Colabelli and Caroline Stewart sprinted to a time of 51.79.

In field events, the Purple’s Stewart grabbed the triple jump championship, landing in the sanded pit at a distance of 35 feet, 1.25 inches. Stewart also finished in second place in the long jump. Her jump of 16 feet-8 inches was just 2.75 inches short of tying the winner of the event.

Norwich’s Barber, Elijah Craddock and Mujini Mutabiilwa place 2-3-4 in the high jump respectively. Barber finished at a height of 5 feet-8 inches while Craddock and Mutabiilwa both cleared 5 feet-6 inches. The group collectively earned 18 points, aiding the Purple Tornado win.

Mutabiilwa also grabbed third place in the boys triple jump with a distance of 40 feet.

Robin Diehl of Norwich claimed second place in the pole vault, clearing the bar at a final height of 6 feet-6 inches.

The Tornado’s Zach Lowe threw the shot put 44 feet in distance––the further than any one in Class B tossed in the shot put event.

The two teams were welcomed home last night by an escort consisting of the Norwich Fire Department and NorwichPolice Department, and paraded through the city.

The Purple Tornado track and field teams now prepare for the New York State Qualifying meet, held by Section IV’s Union-Endicott. The two-day meet, held Wednesday and Thursday of next week, will see all runners from Section IV split into Division-I and Division-II to set their final seeding times before the New York State Championship meet, which will be held on June 8 and June 9.

The qualifier will start at 5 p.m Wednesday and will consist of many semifinal races, setting up the finals for Thursday. The only events that will have finals on Wednesday will be 400, 800, 400 hurdles, the 3000 for girls and the 3200 for the boys on the track.

Field event finals at Wednesday’s event will be boys long jump, pole vault and discus while the girls will compete in shot put and long jump as finals for the events.
