Summer Lacrosse league looks for start in Norwich; Inaugural season to come in early June
NORWICH – Back in the 1980s, Oxford and Sherburne-Earlville were just some of the local schools that had lacrosse teams––but the sport soon disappeared to the area. Today, the closest programs are currently 45 minutes in any direction.
Ever thought about playing Lacrosse? If so, here is your chance to join in the fun of one of the fastest growing sports.
As of last June, the number of national players across the nation eclipsed 825,000.
Bob Leary and Mark Murphy are looking to grow that number by starting a league in Norwich.
“We are looking to bring something back to the area and we think that Norwich is a good area to help grow the sport of Lacrosse,” said Murphy. “We are excited to get started in Norwich because the city has been very positive in their response and has been great to work with.”
On June 3, there will be an exhibition tournament held at the Borden Avenue Skating Rink in Norwich. Teams from the surrounding areas such as Oneonta and Utica will participate.
Those who are interested in seeing what the sport is all about are invited to come and watch the tournament and gain interest. Games are scheduled to start at noon that Sunday.
Following the tournament, those who are interested in playing will be invited to the sign-ups and instruction sessions held on June 5 and June 7. The instruction is an intro to the sport with drills and techniques to be taught by Leary and Murphy, as well as others they bring in.
Depending on the number of players, there will be two leagues. A youth league will be for grades 6-8 and will be at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer. For grade 9 through the age of 60 and above, there will be a competitive league from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Games will begin on June 13 and end July 26.
“We are hoping that we will get enough interest to start an adult travel team and continue to grow from there,” said Murphy.
A US Lacrosse Membership is required in order to participate. Those who wish to play will need to go to www.uslacrosse.org and sign up by clicking on the membership tab to apply. The membership is between $25-$50.
The cost to play in the Norwich Lacrosse League is $50, which includes a reversible jersey and helps pay for the equipment the league furnishes.
A stick, helmet, shoulder pads, gloves and mouthpiece as well as other equipment will be needed in order to play. While there will be some provided at the instruction sessions, prospective players are encouraged to come with their own equipment.
New and/or used equipment is available at Play-It-Again Sports. Brand new gear is always available at places like Dick’s Sporting Goods, as well as online lacrosse retailers.
Leary is currently a member of the coaching staff at Onondaga Community College. In the past month, he helped lead the team to a National Championship in NJCAA. Leary has also been the head coach at SUNY Delhi.
Both Murphy and Leary played throughout college and continue to play on travel teams throughout New York and the surrounding states.
For playing and/or sponsorship information, Bob or Kerry Leary can be contacted at (607) 433-0998 as well as through email at Learyrt@gmail.com. Mark Murphy can also be contacted at (315) 383-8541.
