Oxford murderer to remain in prison for life

NORWICH – Convicted killer Jeremy Coates was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Friday, and a key witness for the prosecution, Melissa Crispell, received the minimum sentence of 15 years in prison for her involvement in the crime.

Coates was convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of first-degree robbery for his role in the murder of 58 year-old veteran, David Green.

Green was murdered in his Oxford home on September 23, 2016 by Coates, striking him in the head with a weapon.

Crispell pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery on May 12, 2017 as part of a plea deal.

Throughout the proceedings, Coates denied his guilt in the murder, and interrupted Chenango County Court Judge Frank Revoir Jr., to plead his case during his final appearance for sentencing.

“I feel that I didn’t get a fair trial,” said Coates. “I didn’t do it.”

A niece of the victim attended the sentencing, and was given the opportunity to speak in court.

“I hope every time Mr. Coates closes his eyes he hears the cries of my uncle for the 25 minutes he beat him,” she said. “[Green] would have given them anything if they asked for it, even the shirt off of his back.”

Following the relative’s speech, Revoir addressed Coates’ claim of innocence.

“You should never be allowed back into any community, under any circumstances. You are a threat to every person in this courtroom today,” said Revoir.

Revoir said Coates had a history of crime dating back to 1998, including a violent crime which almost cost another victim their life.

Revoir then sentenced Coates to life in prison without parole, along with an additional 120 years in prison with 15 years post-release supervision for the charges of which he was convicted.

Instead of claiming she was innocent, Crispell said she felt horrible about what happened to Green, and asked the court for forgiveness.

“I cannot say enough about how truly sorry I am. I hope you can forgive me,” said Crispell.

Revoir told Crispell that she played a major role in Green’s death by helping organize the robbery.

“You should get more than 15 years in prison,” Revoir said, “but because you did as the plea required, you’re getting 15 instead of 25 years in prison.”

Following the proceedings, District Attorney Joseph McBride spoke about Coates.

“The man who has lived his life as a coward is now going to be behind bars to make sure he doesn’t hurt anybody else,” said McBride.

Assistant Public Defender Zachary Wentworth said an appeal will be filed on Coates’ behalf in the future.
