Storm 7th grader finishes runner-up at NYSPHSAA Girls Golf Championship; Shoemaker sets state round record
FARMINGDALE – A few months ago, she was competing on national television in the 12 to 13-year-old division at the Drive, Chip and Putt Challenge at the Augusta National course – the same course the professionals play on for the Masters’ Tournament.
Now, the Unadilla Valley seventh-grader will have her name enshrined in the record books for the 18-hole NYSPHSAA girls golf championship for a long time to come.
Bailey Shoemaker started day two of the NYSPHSAA girls golf championship six spots behind the leader, Melanie Greene from Medina. Shoemaker ended the second-round of the tournament with a 65, seven strokes under par to finish in second place of the state tournament held at Bethpage State Park Yellow Course.
What does Shoemaker contribute the comeback to? Her putting.
“The round before, putting was one of my biggest flaws,” said Shoemaker. “We spent two hours after the round working on putting on the practice green.”
She opened the second round with a birdie on her first hole of the day. Shoemaker added another birdie to her scorecard after sinking a 12-foot put on the seventh hole.
Continuing to chip away at the lead and the record, Shoemaker produced a four-shot score on the the par five 10th before adding yet another birdie on the 13th.
“Most of the day, I was just trying improve,” said Shoemaker. “After about 12 holes through, I realized I might have a chance to win. The putts just kept on falling.”
Her final two birdies of the round came an 18-footer on 15 and a 20-footer on the 18th . On the back nine holes, she shot five strokes under the par 32.
“It was nice course and it was in pretty good condition,” said Shoemaker of the NYSPHSAA championship course. She would know what it is like to play on nice courses as Shoemaker has played on one of the most prestigious courses of the PGA Tour.
Now that the school season is over, Shoemaker will be continuing to play in tournaments all summer long. She will be playing in front of many college coaches, some who have already started to look at the young, talented golfer.
Duke, UNC, UVA, Clemson, Stanford. You have heard of these schools as some of the top NCAA Division-I colleges across the country. “All the schools are pretty equal right now. I can’t really make a decision yet,” said Shoemaker when asked where she would like to go.
She still has a few years before a final decision is made. First, she has to tackle the eighth grade.
