Savannah M. Williams Golf Tournament to be played this Saturday; Spots are still available for teams to register
NORWICH – For the second year, Savannah William’s family and friends invite you to play at the Savannah M. Williams Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place, this Saturday, June 9 at the Canasawacata Country Club in Norwich.
Williams tragically died in a car accident on December 20, 2016. The memorial tournament reminds many of how much she enjoyed life.
Her family invites you to the same in the four-player, captain and crew style of play.
Currently, the golf tournament has 22 teams filled of the 36 allowance and committee members are seeking to fill the final 14 spots.
The tournament serves as a fundraising event for the Savannah Marie Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded annually to two graduating-Norwich seniors who share similar passions as did Savannah: an aspiration to contribute to the science world, a commitment to community and education, and a passion for athletics.
“Last year’s fundraising efforts – a bottle drive, the golf tournament, picnic and a motorcycle ride – was enough to be able to provide this scholarship for years to come,” said Shari Williams, Savannah’s mother.
The 2018 recipients of the scholarship in Savannah’s name were LeahAnne Humphrey and Kalie Binelli. Both girls are graduating in June and will use the scholarship to attend college in the fall.
The tournament a year ago had a barbeque, a corn-hole tournament and live entertainment following the golfing portion of the fundraising event. This year, the committee has decided to just host a golf tournament and picnic for those playing.
“Last year’s event had a lot of planning and many people were involved to make sure the event was successful,” said Williams. “It took a village to make everything happen, which was super nice and appreciated.
“After going back-and-forth, we decided not to open it this year due to many logistics.”
The cost is $85 per player or $340 per team of four. With a few days left, preregistration is strongly encouraged. Payment will for the team is to be made the day of the event. To sign up, contact Alex Williams at alexanderswilliams36@yahoo.com
The tournament will start at 10 a.m. with shotgun start. The picnic to follow will have a raffle as well as music provided by DJ Carlos Ithier.
For those who wish to donate an item for the raffle are also asked to contact Alex Williams.
“We, as a family, cannot believe the support we have seen over the past year. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of the community.
It’s just amazing how supportive this community is and how they rally when someone is hurting. We are still in awe of it.”
If you are unable to attend Saturday’s fundraiser but would like to contribute to The Savannah Marie Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund, checks can be made payable to ‘SMW Memorial Fund’ and can be mailed to Kurt Edwards, 287 Aurora Drive, Norwich, NY 13815.
