Legion members honored by Post 376 Commander

OXFORD – Sons of the American Legion (SAL) and Legionnaire volunteer chicken barbecue grill masters of Post 376, who go by the name of the "Chicken Pluckers," were venerated on May 28 for their selfless labor by Legion Commander Darlene Ardron, with gifts of custom-made aprons.

To design the specially decorated aprons, Darlene collaborated with embroiderer, Cyndi Henderson. Ardron wanted a unique gift for all the hard work the (mostly) SAL cookers had done (and were doing); something they could be proud to wear. Cyndi did the machine stitchery on a half dozen restaurant quality, bib aprons. They were presented appropriately on Memorial Day, during the barbecue held at Post 376. The Commander, who joins the cookers during their events, bestowed the gifts that day to Tim McGowan, Tim Ross, Kurt Spencer, (Legionnaire) Jim Pollard, and Dan "Big Red" Fagnani.

Ardron joyfully said to the Pluckers, "Working together for the good of the community… this is for our camaraderie, friendship, and teamwork. You're just fabulous!"

The barbecues are time consuming and labor intensive. The Chicken Pluckers have to start their hardwood fire at five in the morning. An hour later, the grill is usually ready for cooking the deliciously marinated chicken (with a "secret sauce" they won't reveal). The intoxicating smoke draws in the public, and they start selling the cooked, bagged halves at nine, until they're sold out, approximately at noon. They have had chicken barbecues to raise funds for the American Legion, the Oxford Lions Club, the Oxford Band Boosters, the Oxford Community Youth Center, and other groups.

Mark your calendar, for the next chicken BBQ will be on Saturday, July 7, to benefit the Oxford Academy Wrestling team. Come early and pull into the Rte. 12 side Legion parking lot and tell 'em how many halves you want.
