Charity Kids’ bike ride raises $16k to fight cancer
NORWICH – The 3rd Annual PMC Kids Bike Ride in Norwich took place on June 3 at the Perry Browne School. The event raises money to fight cancer with proceeds going to Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Many volunteers from the community were on hand to assist in making the event fun for all of the riders. Norwich City School District student volunteers Saige Benedict, Emerson Burton and Alexis Polcare painted faces, while Alexis and Samantha Taylor worked with Katelyn Pope and Jameson Revior to entertain the children.
Norwich High School juniors Hannah and Brenna Baker make the event possible, and the twins themselves have raised tens of thousands in donations to date.
Hannah led the riders with warm-up activities and the ride started immediately following the playing of the National Anthem. Dan Heuer kept the good times rolling with the perfect selection of music. Ashley Marvin assisted all the younger riders in the trike bike section of the ride. Jeremy Ardis helped keep the riders safe as they did laps around the route. Kaitlyn Korver of Korver Photography was on hand taking pictures of all of the activities.
Children from all over Chenango County traveled to Norwich to participate in the ride. Every rider pedaled to their hearts content and also enjoyed free refreshments provided by Chobani, Dunkin Donuts and others. The riders were all very excited to receive their coupon for a free ice cream cone donated by Dusty’s Dairy Bar.
During the award ceremony, the three highest fundraisers, Isaiah Sholes, Taylor Palmer and Nathaniel Ray were recognized.
Ray, who has participated in the event every year since 2016, beat his personal goal and raised over $1,200 for this year’s ride. Every participant received a prize for their fundraising efforts.
Rachel Pier and Kevin Morgan of AAA Northeast from Utica, NY traveled to Norwich on Sunday to donate a $1,000 for the event.
Hannah and Brenna set a goal of raising $15,000 for the event.
They held a spaghetti dinner, silent auction, bottle drive and bake sale at Taylor’s County House earlier in the year to help reach their fundraising goal. So far this year, they have raised just over $16,000.
