Third annual Chobani Healthy Challenge kicks-off this weekend

NORWICH – The 3rd annual Eat Smart, Play More: Chobani Healthy Challenge aiming to promote healthy, fun living while raising money for local charities will kick-off this Saturday at 10 a.m. in Norwich's Weiler Park.

Created by Chenango County Health Department's Building a Health Community Coalition and Chobani, the 12-week nutrition and fitness challenge pits four to five person teams against one another to compete for monetary donations that will be given to the charity of the winning team's choice.

Teams earn points by completing daily nutrition and fitness challenges, participating in community health events, and competing in special challenge events. Chenango County Director of Environmental Health Isaiah Sutton said this year's challenge features new and rousing challenges for participants.

"New this year, we're going to offer a calendar of exciting, special challenge events which will include canoe trips, free fishing demos, we're going to do some community gardening, and those are just a few of the exciting things we have planned," said Sutton.

Registrations will be accepted until June 18 when the daily challenges begin. Applications to register can be found at www.co.chenango.ny.us/public-health/chobani.php under the link "Team Registration Form."

Teams are asked to arrange a time to weigh-in at the Chenango County Office Building before the challenge begins. In addition to the winning teams being awarded at the challenge's end, individual prize packs will be awarded to participating individuals who demonstrate the greatest percent decrease in body mass index.

Chobani Director of Communications Jeff Genung said, "Since day one, Chobani’s been on a mission to make universal wellness happen sooner — and this starts right in our own backyard ... [Chobani Healthy Challenge] is a great opportunity for our community – and our own employees – to eat smart and play more. We encourage everyone to come out and join the challenge – hopefully it’ll be your healthiest summer yet."

Sutton said as of Wednesday, 25 teams have registered for the challenge; organizers say it is their goal for 30 teams to register, or close to 200 participants.
