Frank Speziale Photo NORWICH – The County of Chenango Industrial Agency shipped a commercial freight through Norwich on June 13, signaling the completion of a railroad restoration project that began over 12 years ago, and an open market for potential consumers.
In an official statement, the Commerce Chenango President and CEO Steve Craig stated the shipment began at Bull Moose Tube Company in Elkhart, Indiana and was headed towards the Di Highway Sign and Structure Corporation in New York Mills, by Utica.
“In 2006, after floodwaters severely damaged the line in more than twenty locations in Chenango County, NYSW suspended service,” stated Craig.
He stated two years later the New York Susquehanna and Western Railroad filed to abandon the line.
“[The County of Chenango Industrial Agency], considering the line to be vital transportation infrastructure, objected, and began laying the groundwork for a restoration project, starting with a 2010 study by the engineering firm Stone Consulting,” stated Craig.
He stated that in 2011, the county’s industrial agency was awarded a $772,000 grant from the New York State Department of Transportation towards repairing the line.
“That funding, plus contributions from Chenango County, Development Chenango Corporation, [The County of Chenango Industrial Agency], and [New York Susquehanna and Western] leveraged a $4.7 million dollar grant from the US Economic Development Administration, which was award in 2013,” he stated.
According to Craig, in 2015 the Frontier Railroad Service was chosen from several bidders to handle a number of tasks including, washout repair, installation of new culverts, new drainage installations, and the placement of hundreds of new rail crossties for the line restoration.
“[New York Susquehanna and Western]’s own labor force performed repairs to the electronic and mechanical equipment at grade crossings along the 45 miles of track in Chenango County, completing that work in June of 2018,” stated Craig.
Craig stated the restored freight rail service is currently being marketed to potential customers in Chenango County, and elsewhere on the New York Susquehanna and Western system.
