The Zerbini Family Circus performed at the fairgrounds
NORWICH - The nationally recognized Zerbini Family Circus traveled to the Chenango County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, and presented the attending families a variety of acts, including a live animal show, sword and knife balancing, and multi-person juggling.
The circus held its show at the Chenango County Fairgrounds, and families lined up to enjoy the event.
“When the Ringling closed, everyone thought circuses [were] gone, but that is not the case,” said Zerbini Family Circus Owner Alain Zerbini during an interview last year.
Zerbini said the show is different from other circus acts because of how small the operation is, and the effort his family contributes to making everything work.
He said the performers assist in setting up the tent in the morning, perform their shows, then help tear everything down afterwards. Zerbini added that costs of maintaining equipment and transportation can make the circus life difficult, and he couldn’t do it without his family.
A performer in the show, Julian Zerbini, said he has been involved with the circus his entire life, and he got involved because of his parents and his love for working with animals.
“What I really enjoy doing is working with the animals,” said Julian Zerbini.
Throughout the animal performances, Julian Zerbini is most often the one leading them around the ring and performing the tricks which he said he enjoys doing.
His acts have drawn controversy however, as the family circus has received negative attention from animal activists.
The company has shows lined up throughout New York State for the rest of the month, and plan to continue performing throughout the nation later this year.
