Fifth grader wins annual spelling bee club competition
NORWICH – The Norwich Spelling Bee Club held their annual spelling bee competition on June 16, 2018, at the New York State Veteran’s Home, located in Oxford, NY. Damien Murphy a fifth-grade student at Valley Heights Christian Academy won the championship. Amon Oliver, a fourth-grade student from Norwich City School, secured the 2nd place, and Maria Funk a second-grade homeschool student earned the third place at the competition.
According to event organizer Martha Ryan, the competition help students improve their spelling, vocabulary, and public presentation skills. “This is a fun competition that allows students, at any grade level, to challenge their knowledge level,” said Ryan.
The NYS Veterans Home hosts practice competitions throughout the year to help the students practice and also to provide unique entertainment for the residents who enjoy the event both at the community room or at their dorms thanks to video streaming. “The administration goes out of their way to welcome our students, and the residents enjoy the performance making this a win-win for everyone,” said Ryan
Awards for the top three winners were graciously provided by Jim and Susan Fertig. According to the Fertigs, supporting programs like this one is a good investment in education initiatives that prepare our students to access opportunities for success. The New York Vets home and multiple business owners also donated participation gifts for all Bee Club students. “We are grateful for all the support we receive from people and organizations who share our passion to coach and mentor our youth,” said Ryan.
The Norwich Spelling Bee Club is a parent supported group that meets weekly on Thursday evenings from 6pm until 7pm in the meeting room at the Guernsey Memorial Library. The new season will begin after Labor Day. Parental participation in this program is required. The group is made up of spellers from first to fifth grade. The program uses mock competitions and games to learn words. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
