Homer steals road win from Chenango Hellcats, 4-3
NORWICH – 12 errors between the two teams called for a battle until the end. Fortunately for Homer, a glitch in the Chenango Hellcats defense allowed the winning run to score in the top of sixth for a final of 4-3.
Hellcats picked up the early lead, scoring three runs in the third.
In the lead-off spot, Mikey Graven-Briigs made contact on the first pitch of his at-bat. His hard ground ball went in the direction of Homer’s shortstop. Unable to make a clean play on the ball, Graven-Briigs rounded first and reached second safely as the throw from the shortstop was overthrown.
Ben Skillin, the next batter for the Hellcats in the line-up, grounded out to the third baseman. Going after Skillin to get the out, Graven-Briigs advanced to third on the out, setting up scoring position for Jon Heggie.
Heggie sent a ground ball to right field, scoring Graven-Briigs for the home teams first run of the game.
With a 3-1 count, J.T Vinal ripped a line drive to left field. Heggie was able to score from first as Vinal ended up at third to record the RBI triple.
On the next pitch, Nate Scheer hit a hard ground in the direction of the Homer third baseman. Once again, the infielder was unable to come up with the ball, allowing Scheer to get on base while Vinal came in for the third run of the inning.
However, Homer answered in the top of the fifth win an error by Skillin score the visiting team’s first run.
Later in the inning, a double set up a runner at second and a follow-up single drove in the next run. The final run of the frame scored by Homer was due to a a miscue recorded by the Hellcats defense, tying the game at 3-3.
A hiccup in the top of the sixth by the Hellcats proved to be costly as the go-ahead Homer run crossed home plate to take a 4-3 lead.
While the Hellcats did not go down without a fight, the next two offensive frames for the Hellcats weren’t enough to claw back for the win.
Vinal went 2-for-4 on the day, leading the Hellcats at the plate. Graven-Briigs also picked up two hits at the plate. The two totaled for four of the Hellcats six hits as a team.
Scheer started on the mound, lasting five innings. He allowed just five hits and two earned runs while striking out 12 Homer batters.
Heggie came on in relief for the final two innings. With the winning run earned in the sixth, Heggie was tagged with the loss. He surrendered four hits and struck out three.
The Chenango Hellcats will be in action again on Wednesday, July 4 with a 6 p.m. start time. They will host the team from Endicott.
