Solar company to host seminar on lowering utility costs
NORWICH – Southern Tier Solar Works is coming to Norwich this month to host a free seminar on its 2018 Community Shared Solar non-profit program named Solarize, which offers discounted solar power to people who cannot, or choose not, to install solar panels on their home.
The seminar is at 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 11, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, located on 99 North Broad Street in Norwich. It will focus on community solar and how people could be saving ten percent on their electric utility bills while supporting a locally-produced clean energy.
"Participants in this workshop will learn how they can subscribe to a solar farm in our region and receive credit for discounted solar power on their [New York State Electric and Gas] bill," said Southern Tier Solar Works Clean Energy Coordinator Kevin Brouillard.
Brouillard said the event is free to attend, and will include free snacks and refreshments, along with information for anyone who pays a NYSEG bill including renters, homeowners, small businesses, non-profits, low-income residents, farmers, and students.
He said to sign up for the seminar, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/community-solar-info-session-tickets-47028930798, and he added space on the solar energy program is limited to a first-come, first-serve basis and it runs for a certain amount of time, ending on September 30 later this year.
"Due to New York State utility regulations, to qualify you must be a NYSEG, non-demand meter customer living in Delaware, Chenango, and Otsego counties in order to participate," said Brouillard.
He said a solar farm developer from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Delaware River Solar, partnered with Southern Tier Solar Works to assist with the campaign.
According to Brouillard, Southern Tier Solar Works is also supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority under Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's NY-Sun initiative, and NY-Sun will invest up to $1 billion in solar power through 2023 to significantly expand solar installations across the State, ultimately transforming New York’s solar industry to become more self-sustaining.
