Sheriff’s Camp welcomes children from around Chenango County
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office's annual Sheriff Camp will begin again on Monday, with about 70 children already signed up to attend.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Camp is a free summer program focused on teaching children life lessons, encouraging positive character traits, and providing campers with positive interactions with law enforcement.
The program is funded by the sheriff’s office, a sum of money left by the previous sheriff, and donations collected from individuals and businesses located throughout the county.
“We had a couple little girls started off as campers, then returned as volunteers, and finally after attending college, applied to be counselors – that's the kind of impact this program can have on people's lives,” said Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting.
According to Cutting, campers will have the opportunity to take part in numerous activities including, swimming, dancing, extinguishing a fire in a controlled environment, receiving safe child identification cards, viewing a helicopter landing, and learning about the corrections process.
Cutting said to help run the camp, the county has hired 13 counselors, four of them trained as life-guards, and all of them are certified in first-aid, CPR, and AED deployment.
"We wanted to ensure the counselors were prepared and trained to act if necessary, especially with kids spending time in the water," said Cutting.
This year the camp will begin with Norwich and Oxford students participating in the program from July 7 to July 12, and the other schools have a scheduled date as well.
Cutting said the sheriff's office will have deputies rotating through the area every day so the kids can ask them questions, and parents know their children are protected.
