Town of Oxford Superintendent of Highways retires after 28 years on the job
OXFORD – The Town of Oxford Board accepted the retirement of 28-year Superintendent of Highway Timothy Tefft at its meeting Wednesday night.
Tefft, who has spent the last 32 years with the town highway department, submitted his retirement notice, effective September 28, in a letter addressed to town board members on June 21.
Supervisor Lawrence Wilcox and Oxford Town Board members accepted Tefft's retirement with regrets.
Wilcox said to Tefft, "I certainly do thank you for your service to the town. I've had extremely few calls over the 21 years that I've been supervisor, as far as complaints about our roads, and I think that speaks very well to you."
In his retirement letter, Tefft thanked Wilcox and Oxford Town Clerk James W. Hemstrought, Jr. for their support over the years.
Board member Jerry Locke told Tefft, "You will be missed."
Proceeding with the meeting, Wilcox noted the town will soon have a vacant Superintendent of Highway position and said he thinks the town should advertise for the job, which is an exempt civil service position requiring no qualifications by which the town must abide.
He noted Tefft's term as Superintendent of Highway ends on December 31, 2019, and that whoever fills the position following Tefft's retirement will finish out the remainder of his term.
As they discussed their search for a new Superintendent of Highway, Locke asked, "Worst case scenario, if we can't find a suitable candidate: what do we do?"
Tefft responded, "We'll see."
Wilcox queried Tefft if he was relocating to another area, and when Tefft said he wasn't, Wilcox said, "I would assume you would be willing the shepherd us through the few months."
Asked if he has any plans for his retirement, Tefft said, "Not yet. Just keeping my wife happy."
