Chenango Blues Association gears-up for 26th annual festival

NORWICH – The 26th annual Chenango Blues Fest slated for Friday and Saturday, August 17 and 18 will see a dozen artists from across the country flock to the Chenango County Fairgrounds for a display of some of the best blues music one could see in an intimate venue.

Recognized nationally in 2016 as the recipient of The Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive award, the Chenango Blues Festival has asserted itself as a destination for lovers of the blues every summer since 1993.

And as the festival grows every year – the first Chenango Blues Fest in ‘93 had 200 attendees; last year’s blues fest had over 3,500 – so does the Chenango Blues Association’s (CBA) reputation and resources to book bigger acts.

Headlining this year’s festival will be Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio on the infield stage before Samantha Fish caps the weekend off on the tent stage.

Chenango Blues Association President Eric Larson said, “The two at the top of the bill Saturday night are a great one-two punch. Elvin Bishop is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, he’s a legend.

“Samantha Fish just won Best Female Artist of the Year at the Blues Music Awards, and she is a phenomenal guitar player and performer. She is absolutely the fastest rising star in blues and I don’t think anybody who knows blues would argue the point that she’s the next big deal.”

New this year, Larsen said, is organizers have revamped this year’s festival to have the last show end inside the tent stage instead of the infield stage.

“You get a great vibe in there, it’s more like a giant club [than a tent]. People can pack up close, the artist is really right up in front of you. We just think it’s going to be a great, fun way to close out the show,” said Larsen, adding that the tent stage will be under a taller tent with a higher stage this year than in year’s past.

Larsen said by ending the festival on the tent stage, organizers were able to feature a local blues artist in this year’s festival. The Nate Gross Band, led by locally lauded blues guitarist Nate Gross of Oxford, will perform at this year’s festival on the tent stage.

“We really wanted to get back to [featuring local performers] because we think it’s important for local artists to have an outlet like this where they can get out in front of some new fans, new people from out of town, and kind of help them get the word out about their music,” said Larsen.

As the festival has grown in size and reputation ever year, more and more people travel from out of town to camp at the festival. Larsen said word of mouth from people both in and out of Chenango County has contributed to the festival’s success.

“That’s really important to us, we’ve got not only people from town but people from a wide-radius around Chenango County,” said Larsen. “They’ve gotten familiar with us and supported us and helped get the word out about the shows, and that is the number one way of getting more people to come: have a friend tell you that it was a great time.”

Larsen added that Tops in Norwich has offered up their parking lot for RVs and campers the Thursday night prior to the blues fest when Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes – the biggest act the CBA has put on to date – plays at the 2018 NBT Bank Free Thursday Summer Concert Series on August 16.

From 9 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, the Norwich Business Improvement District will once again sponsor a free shuttle running from the fairground to downtown Norwich and back, providing campers at the blues fest safe transportation downtown.

“We’re really hoping it’ll be successful because if a lot of people come to the shows, we can continue to get the extra funds that we need to get the bigger acts,” Larsen said.

Tickets for the 26th annual Chenango Blues Fest are $25 in advance, $35 at the gate and can be found at a number of locations in Chenango County, all of which are listed at www.chenangobluesfest.org/tickets.html.

Tickets can also be bought over the phone by calling Commerce Chenango at (607) 334-1400 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Mail order tickets can also be purchased by mailing a check and self addressed envelope to Chenango Blues Tickets, 54 Borden Ave #B22, Norwich, NY 13815.
