42nd Antique Show, 7th Canal Boat Derby slated for Sunday
NORWICH – The 42nd annual Antiques Show and 7th annual Canal Boat Derby benefitting the Chenango County Historical Society will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
Antiques Show Chair John Antonowicz said about 25 dealers will be set up with booths at the fairgrounds Sunday offering quality antiques ranging from glassware, furniture, toys, tools, jewelry, holiday decor, and much more.
"Dealers will come and set up their booths and then people come and find that long lost treasure that they need for their collection," said Antonowicz. "We have some new antique dealers this year which is really exciting."
Admission to the Antiques Show is $4. Proceeds from admissions and from vendors' fees will directly benefit the Chenango County Historical Society.
Admission fees are waved for those who participate in the Canal Boat Derby. For $10 a boat or $25 for three, patrons can sponsor model canal boats which will be dumped off of the bridge located beside the fairgrounds before floating downstream toward a finish line.
The purchaser of the winning canal boat will receive a top prize package of $500 cash donated by Visions Federal Credit Union, a pair of season tickets to Chenango Arts Council's 2018-19 Performance Series, and a year's subscription to The Evening Sun.
"The first 50 or so boats to come across will win a prize and all the prizes have been donated by local businesses, organizations, artists and craftsmen," said Canal Boat Derby Chair Lukas Brown.
Brown said organizers expect to sell around 500 boat derby tickets for the event.
Antonowicz said while the Antiques Show is the historical society's longest running fundraiser, when coupled with the Canal Boat Derby, the two are the society's largest fundraiser of the year.
If you are interested in being an antiques dealer at this year's show, it's not too late to get involved. Contact the Chenango County Historical Society at (607) 334-9227 for more information.
Tickets for the Canal Boat Derby may be purchased in advance by calling the historical society or by contacting any of its board members.
Also featured at the fairgrounds during the Antiques Show and Canal Boat Derby will be the event's ever-popular bake sale offering pies, cookies, breads and more baked by volunteers of the historical society and antique vendors.
Gilligan's Ice Cream and Poppy's Food Truck will also be at the antique show.
Noting that a large tent has been reserved for this year's show, Antonowicz said, "Everything is dry somewhere, even if it rains. We will be here rain or shine."
