NORWICH – In kicking off the 2018-19 academic year, Norwich City School District recognized its Teacher and Employee of the Year on Tuesday morning.
Norwich City School District Superintendent Gerard O'Sullivan named Alison Locke Teacher of the Year and Joni Figary Employee of the Year on Tuesday as staff returned for the upcoming academic year.
Locke, a science teacher who has served the district for 16 years, was recognized by O'Sullivan as "...soft spoken, but a giant in the classroom."
"She invests in her students' learning, fosters strong relationships and challenges students every chance she gets," said O'Sullivan. "She sets high expectations and her students rise to meet those expectations."
An NHS alumni, Locke has been recognized as a Master Teacher at the state level and fosters a passion for data, O'Sullivan said.
"Thank you for building bridges for the students, faculty and parents of Norwich High School for the last 16 years," said O'Sullivan to Locke. "You have taught, encouraged, mentored, praised, influenced, guided and inspired."
Figary was honored as Employee of the Year in recognition of 34-years serving the district under a number of roles including Teacher Aide, typist, and simply being "...the oil that keeps the well-oiled machine called Gibson functioning smoothly," O'Sullivan said.
"She knows all of the systems that keep the building running," said O'Sullivan. "She works tirelessly to ensure that everything is ready for the first day of school, and during the school year she ensures that everyone has coverage, and everyone has everything they need, many times fulfilling last minute requests."
In addition to her daily duties, O'Sullivan said, Figary has gone above and beyond with her volunteering with the Purple Tornado Community Teach during Winter Wonderland, Holiday Shoppe, and Spring Frolic.
"The Employee of the Year is dedicated to the staff, students, family and community, and we couldn't run the building without her," said O'Sullivan.
