Tornado netters beat Forks in close match

CHENANGO FORKS – Losing twice to Chenango Forks last year, the Norwich girls tennis team was looking for a win against the Blue Devils. The Lady Tornado were able to return home with a close 4-3 final.

Norwich head coach John Stewart stated the team was capable of sweeping doubles side, which would give the Tornado three of the four points needed to secure the victory. “We had to pick up just one win out of the four singles matched to win,” said Stewart.

Lucie Martin of Norwich picked up her first varsity point at fourth singles, giving the Tornado a point they needed. Martin won the only single point for Norwich.

Of the other single players, Katie Gawronski played a strong first set against a seasoned singles player for the Lady Blue Devils. Gawronski led the 4-3 in the first set before being defeated 6-4.

Ava Granquist lost her match 6-3, 6-2 to a what Stewart described as a very good player for Forks.

Natalie Benenati and Riley Marsh grabbed a point for the Purple Tornado while teammates Hailey Colabelli and Hannah Baker did the same. Colabelli and Baker remained undefeated by winning in straight sets.
