Tornado volleyball bring down Class A Maine-Endwell Spartans, 3-0

ENDWELL – The Lady Tornado Volleyball team traveled to Maine-Endwell, a Class A school and brought home a 3-0 win over the Spartans.
Norwich took the first game 25-16 and followed it with a 25-22 win.
In the final game, the Tornado trailed 16-22. Head coach Shelly Alger and her assistant Pete Kominderek made the necessary adjustments and the girls rallied to tie the game at 23-23.
Norwich finished off the Spartans just five point later, winning the game 26-24 to take the match in just three games.
Gabby Eddy, a senior for the Purple Tornado, played the game her coaches have been looking for according to Alger. Eddy finished the night with a total of 13 kills and three blocks.
Also having a great night on the floor for Norwich were Ripley and Riley Strong, Alger’s twin setters, as they combined for 16 assists of the course of the three games. Their teammate Lexi Taylor finished with a full statline, ending the night with three aces, six kills, one block and two digs.
“The girls played really well after a long weekend of volleyball,” said Alger. “We said we had to refocus and we had to come out attacking and the girls did. They played the way we coaches knew they could.”
Over the weekend, the Lady Purple Tornado played at the Union-Endicott Tournament and faced some tough competition.
FIrst up for Norwich was the tough Windsor Black Knights. Only playing two games, the Tornado hung tough in both but lost 20-25 and 18-25.
The girls recovered to win the next six games, beating Oswego (25-15, 25-17), Solvay (25-8, 25-21) and Johnson City (25-21, 25-24) to finish 6-2 in pool play.
Norwich received the fifth seed in the gold bracket, the top bracket in the tournament. They were joined by Bainbridge-Guilford, Union-Endicott, Windsor and Cicero-North Syracuse (CNS).
Facing CNS in the opening game of bracket play, which was one game and winner moves on, Norwich fought hard but lost to the game 18-25.
Norwich finished the tournament with a record of 6-3.
“We played some very good schools that we don’t get a chance to play normally which helps us,” said Alger.
For the tournament, Riley Strong finished with 25 assists, Lexi Taylor had 25 kills and Sam Binelli came home with 12 digs.
The Tornado junior varsity traveled to Schoharie on Saturday and brought home the championship from the tournament they participated in.
Norwich will be on the road Thursday to face Windsor for a rematch from Saturday. Varsity will play at the conclusion of the JV game, which scheduled for 5 p.m.
