New Berlin ambulance service imperiled by loss of technicians
NEW BERLIN – Following financial concerns over the future of New Berlin’s Ambulance Service, town council members reported Monday that two full-time emergency medical technicians recently resigned from the village’s service.
The village, who manages the service for the surrounding towns will meet to discuss the issue tonight.
Village of New Berlin Emergency Medical Service Commissioner Carol Riley deferred making comments until officials discuss the topic during the public board meeting at, 6:30 p.m. tonight in the Village Hall, on 13 South Main Street, New Berlin New York.
The service is currently managed by the Village of New Berlin and contracts with three neighboring municipalities. Due to loss of income, village and town officials are searching for possible private alternatives.
The New Berlin Ambulance Service is paid for by a contract between the Village of New Berlin, the Town of New Berlin, the Town of Columbus and the Town of Pittsfield.
Town of New Berlin officials said the service currently covers a 12-15 mile radius around the Village of New Berlin. The towns of New Berlin, Columbus and Pittsfield collectively pay about $100,800 to the village for coverage, and according to village documents, from June 2017 through May 2018 the service has cost the village $399,216.
“The update is, the two full-time emergency medical technicians (EMT) working for the ambulance service have resigned,” said Town of New Berlin Supervisor Robert Starr.
Starr said the service members were given severance pay, and now New Berlin’s ambulance service is in need of paramedics or individuals trained in ALS (advanced life support) who are interested in working 36 hours a week while village officials search for full-time replacements.
He added for the moment, there is a emergency medical technician working per diem for the ambulance service for coverage, but the village will need more of them in the near future.
“Now they have to go out and find new EMT’s to fill in the 96 hour pay period that is now not covered,” said Starr. “It’s going to take time to get out there, to put the word out, and find some ALS’ and paramedics that want to work per diem.”
Starr also explained how shifts may work for per diem emergency medical technicians interested in filling those positions.
“The logic of it was, the paramedic or ALS comes in and works one 24 hour shift, and then the second shift would be a 12 hour shift – totaling 36 hours in any given week, per diem,” said Starr.
He said currently the per diem idea is one of several possibilities for the service, but ultimately it comes down to finding technicians and working out manageable schedules.
“Mayor Potter is supposed to me with me tomorrow, and we’re going to talk about where it’s going,” he said.
Starr said in the meantime, the service is still attempting to provide mutual aid to other areas and covering the needs of the New Berlin community.
“For the month of August, the ambulance service had 54 calls, 7 of the 54 calls occurred in the Town of New Berlin,” he said. “Mutual aid accounted for 24 calls.”
Starr said out of those 54 calls, only 27 were billable.
“Those calls could have been that way because the ambulance service was called out to a house or business, and they were called off before they got there,” he said.
