Lady Tornado shuts out last 2 opponents on the tennis court

ENDWELL – Norwich played their final non-league match of the season, blanking Maine-Endwell 7-0. This was the Purple Tornado’s second match win in a sweep after defeating Windsor on Friday afternoon.
Playing in different positions, Norwich went with a sectional line-up to begin preparation for the Section IV class championships.
At first singles for the match, Norwich’s Lucie Martin continued to impress giving up just one game to win in straight sets.
Moving from fourth singles spot to play No. 2, the Tornado’s Parker Walsh defeated Maine-Endwell’s Hannah Green in straight sets. “Parker is playing everyday with more confidence,” said Norwich Head Coach John Stewart. “This was a solid win for us today.”
Playing her first singles match of the season, Erica Gage beat her opponent, M-E’s Gracelynn Brooks in straight sets. “Erica played a fantastic mature game for playing her first singles match,” said Stewart.
Another Tornado who was moved from doubles to singles was senior Hailey Colabelli. Colabelli won her first set 6-1 but found her self down 4-1 in the second. Fighting back to close out the match, Colabelli went on a 5-0 run to win 6-4 for the Norwich point.
Norwich’s Ava Granquist and Katie Gawronski played first doubles as they will be playing doubles in sectionals. The duo showed they can handle doubles as they handed Maine-Endwell’s No. 1 doubles team a loss with set scores of
Also winning in convincing fashion was the Tornado’s second doubles team Riley Marsh and Natalie Benenati.
Hannah Baker and Logan Frendenburg closed out the match for the final point in straight sets.
Against Windsor Friday afternoon, Norwich claimed all seven match points with Gawronski, Walsh and Martin winning their singles match, giving up just one game to their opponent.
Granquist picked up a solid with at third singles for the Tornado while Colabelli and Baker fought back after a first set loss to win the second set, forcing a 10-point super tiebreaker. The duo won the match with a score of 10-6 in the the tiebreaker.
Winning her second point of the season was Norwich’s Brooke Diehl with playing partner Erica. The two played very well in a tight match to come out with the victory.
Norwich plays Seton Catholic for a chance at the divisional championship Tuesday afternoon at Binghamton’s Rec Park. Match is scheduled for a start time of 4 p.m.
