Volunteer firefighters begin exterior training
NORWICH – Volunteers from around Chenango County met in Norwich Monday night, and began discussing the core values and history behind firefighting.
The meeting began at 7 p.m. on Monday, and approximately 13 volunteers from various fire departments in Chenango County met at the Fire Training Center in Norwich to begin the process of being a fire fighter.
The "Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations," course offered by Chenango County is 79 hours long, with meetings usually on Mondays and Wednesdays in the City of Norwich.
The first meeting had two instructors who are full-time Norwich Fire Department Firefighters, Robert Boellmann and Gerald Parry, breaking the ice and explaining certain realities with the volunteers during the class.
"Every year an average of 100 firefighters die when responding to a scene, and in most cases the deaths could have been prevented," said Perry.
According to Chenango County's Bureau of Fire and Emergency Management, the course will teach new firefighters about personal protective equipment (PPE), self-contained breathing apparatus inspection and cylinder changing, fire department communications, building construction and fire behavior, modern fire control research, portable fire extinguishers, rope and knot tying, ground ladders, forcible entry, tactical ventilation theory, water supply, hose and fire streams, loss control, orientation to fire origin and cause determination, fire prevention and life safety initiatives, confined space awareness, overview of first aid and buddy care, and Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations.
The bureau added that this course is the first requirement for anyone who wishes to become a full-fledged interior firefighter.
While the first class was more introductory and paperwork driven, instructors said skill training is not too far out.
In the meantime, homework and reading assignments have been provided to each volunteer.
