SHERBURNE – Hosting a senior night double-header, the Sherburne-Earlville boys and girls soccer teams both came away with victories, giving the six boys and six girls who will graduate in June home a win in their final home game of their career.
The first game of the night was the boys against the Canastota Red Raiders. The Marauders walked away with a 3-0 victory and the senior shined in the contest.
Prior to the start of the game, head coach Mike Rodriguez and the rest of the S-E team honored their seniors – Edward Geier, Owen Rodrirguez, Conor Ryan, Curtis Howard, Caleb Larcher and Andrew Schafer.
It was fitting that on senior night, the Marauders were led by their seniors in the win as Geier tallied two goals, one in the first half.
His goal in the second half provided insurance for Sherburne-Earlville and fellow teammate Rodriguez secured the win for the home team with his shot past the Red Raiders keeper.
The Marauder’s Andrew Fern recorded an assist during the game as well.
Senior keeper Conor Ryan made three big saves to keep a clean sheet in the win.
Sherburne-Earlville travels to play the Adirondack Wildcats Thursday afternoon.
In the second game of the night, the Lady Marauders also faced off against the team from Canastota and came away with a 2-1 victory.
Before the start of their contest, head coach Josh Gray recognized his six seniors – Kaitlyn Furner, Amberlyn Robertson, McKenzie Holmes, Hannah Lawrence, Sammy Moody, and Adeline Trass.
To start the first half, Canastota possessed the ball in their offensive third but the S-E defense allowed very few shots to open the game.
With 15:14 remaining in the first half, the Marauders’ Tessa Cole rifled a shot that went into the upper right corner of the goal, untouched by the Red Raiders goalie to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
A minute later, Canastota put some offensive pressure on Sherburne-Earlville but keeper Makayla Cornelius came up with a diving deflection. Preventing a goal from happening on the follow-up attempt, Cornelius hopped back to her feet and grabbed the ball.
As the playing surface was a bit muddy for both games, the players often slipped to the ground.
Cornelius slipped as she was making a play on the ball and Red Raider McKenzie Leahey took advantage. Leahey ran past the S-E goalie, who attempting to recover from her fall, and put a light touch on the ball to send it into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
The tie score held until 25:38 remaining in the game when Cole fired a rebounded shot that once again hit the top part of the goal to give the lead back to the Marauders.
With 7:30 left, Canastota had another opportunity but Holmes cleared the ball up the field, out of harms way. On the clear, Corey Jeffrey dribbled down the right side of the field before sending in a cross to Robertson, who then took a shot but the attempt went just wide of the left post.
Throughout the game, the outstanding defensive play by Furner, Holmes, Maleah Britton and Ayla Shaw held the Raiders to just five shot attempts.
