Lady Marauders win regular season finale
SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville Lady Marauders field hockey team avenged their loss to Sauquoit Valley earlier in the season by defeating the Indians 2-1 on Friday afternoon.
Sherburne-Earlville’s head coach Christine Layman recognized her six seniors – Jade Diamond, Paige Losee, Savanna Niles, Brooke Smith, Natalie Stewart and Rebecca Turner before the contest began.
Then the seniors and the rest of the Marauders took the field and immediately held the upper hand, controlling the possession in their offensive half.
Less than 10 minutes into the game, Sherburne-Earlville scored the first goal as Stewart found Alexi James on an awarded penalty corner. James’ shot blew past SV’s keeper into the back of the goal with 22:23 left in the first half.
Adding an insurance goal in the second half, the Marauders’ Turner scored as the home team had pressure on the Sauquoit Valley’s defense for a few minutes. Turner was finally able to put the ball between the posts with 13:14 remaining the in the contest.
The Indians’ Madyea McKenney fielded a pass from teammate Jayna Inglis and tallied the lone goal for the visiting team to close the S-E lead down to one. But with just 1:41 left, Sherburne-Earlville was able to hold on for the win in their final league game of the regular season.
S-E’s regular season record finishes at 7-8-1 overall and 5-3 in the league. With their record, the Marauders move into the Section III Class B Tournament, where they will face Clinton at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
