Storm end decade-long playoff drought with win
NEW BERLIN – The eighth-seeded Storm of Unadilla Valley secured their first sectional playoff victory in over a decade on Tuesday afternoon, defeating No. 9 Odessa-Montour 4-2 in the opening round of the Section IV Class C tournament.
UV started the game hot, scoring all four of their goals in the first half.
A punt from Keeper Brandon Kneale cleared the O-M defense and saw Dylan Nichols field the ball. Nichols buried the shot past the Odessa-Montour goalie Dominik Scott, giving UV a 1-0 five minutes into the game.
Senior Wyatt Gray, the Storm’s sweeper, gave the home team a two goal advantage after heading in his first varsity goal from a Cameron Osborne corner kick with 20 minutes to go in the first half.
Nichols took a pass from teammate Spencer Meade and popped the ball into the net to score his second of the contest with 7:19 remaining in the half.
Shortly after, Cameron Osborne buried a 40 yard free kick just over top of the O-M’s Scott, closing out the scoring big half for UV.
In the second half, Odessa-Montour’s Johnny Neidermier scored on a penalty kick that was awarded to the visiting team after hand ball by a UV defender inside the 18 yard box.
