Athlete of the Week: Owen Rodriguez, Sherburne-Earlville Marauders Boys Soccer
His quick footwork creates many opportunities while his shiftiness shakes defenders. His strong boot can send a shot on goal from 30 to 40 yards away. All of this poses a threat for opponents when Owen Rodriguez in on the pitch for the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders.
Rodriguez recorded his 15th goal of the season – one of the highest totals by a boys soccer player in Chenango County – against Central Valley in Saturday’s regular season finale. That’s why he is being named this week’s Evening Sun Athlete of the Week.
As a senior this season, Rodriguez’ role on the team was to be the scoring midfielder but he has been able to do so much more.
While it may not go down on the stat sheet, the leadership role that Rodriguez possess helps lead the direction of his teammates and often creates opportunities for the Marauders.
“His leadership on the field and patient teaching with his teammates has enabled his teammates to raise their level of play,” said head coach Michael Rodriguez.
Owen’s speed and play on the ball can shift the momentum of the game quickly, allowing for Sherburne-Earlville to gain possession of the ball and switch the attacking advantage into their offensive half of the field.
In 2018, Owen recorded one hat trick (against Canastota) and had two two-goal games. His three goal game in Canastota was the second of the seniors career.
A year ago, he was the second leading scorer with nine goals and one assist registered. This year, he filled the role his coach Michael Rodriguez deemed for him in the preseason and that was to lead the scoring push for the Marauders.
According to Coach Rodriguez, Owen is in the Top 20 of all Section III for scoring and is currently being considered for the Syracuse area All-Star game, a fun contest that will be held later this fall.
Sherburne-Earlville ended their 2018 season with a first-round sectional loss to Westhill Wednesday night. It may not be the last you see Rodriguez in the paper this year however. He is also a member of the Marauders basketball team as well as the track and field team.
Owen is currently ranked second in the Class of 2019 at Sherburne-Earlville High School. He plans to attend college at either Syracuse University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), or Buffalo State College as he looks to study architecture. He also plans on playing soccer in college and is currently being pursued by RPI.
