Chenango farm bureau holds 63rd annual meeting

GREENE – The Chenango County Farm Bureau (CCFB) held its 63rd annual meeting at the Silo in Greene on October 23, where it elected board members, passed and reaffirmed policies, and announced CCFB has won its 16th national award––more than any other county farm bureau in the nation.

CCFB President Bradd Vickers announced the local bureau was awarded its 16th American Farm Bureau County Activity of Excellence Award in recognition of its special presentation and project called "Animal Abuse 101 for Law Enforcement." The project will be nationally showcased at the 100th annual American Farm Bureau Federation's annual convention from January 11 to 16, 2019 in New Orleans.

"When we won our first national award – keep in mind it's the American Farm Bureau and every other county and parish in the country compete for this thing – we thought, 'Wow, that's pretty fantastic.' Now we've won 16," said Vickers.

CCFB members were joined at the annual meeting by featured speaker and former New York State Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets Patrick M. Hooker, as well as Joe Angelino representing the office of Assemblyman Clifford Crouch, Chenango County Dairy Princess Morgan Homann, and five FFA students from Afton and Unadilla Valley.

Also in attendance were John and Michelle Peila, who were presented the 2018 Advocate of Agriculture award for their work in promoting Ag Tourism in Chenango County. The Peilas transformed their dairy farm into a corn maze this year, complete with several other autumnal attractions on the side, and has received a positive community response.

"The object is [to award] people who have really helped to promote agriculture, and they certainly did," said Vickers.

CCFB board of directors member Rainy Collins-Vickers said, "[John and Michelle Peila] did very well, they've had over 2,000 people go through [the maze] and I thought they should be recognized for that because it diversified their farm. They're dairy farmers, they're struggling just like every other dairy farmer is, and they promoted agriculture the way it should be promoted."

CCFB members appointed Frederick A. Baker to a two-year term as vice president at the meeting, as well as four board of directors members to two year terms: Keith Vanalthius, Harvey Fletcher, Josh Lathrop, and Jim Miles. A.J. Scheves was elected to a one year term, filling in a spot left by Tyler Hoffman, who was named Young Farmer & Rancher Chair. Collins-Vickers was elected as Pro-Ed Chair.

The county farm bureau announced a special through November 1 for new and returning members to become members in 2019, waving $10 from the membership fee of the usual $85 renewal fee. Additionally, for every new member signed up by an existing member, $5 will be taken off of the next year's membership fee for that individual.

Chenango County Farm Bureau delegates will travel to the New York State Farm Bureau Annual Meeting on December 4 and 5 in Syracuse where its policies will be considered for use at the state level. After that, they will go to New Orleans in January to the national convention.

Vickers encourages anyone interested in joining CCFB to do so. For more information, visit www.ccfbny.org or search Chenango County Farm Bureau on Facebook. You can also call (607) 334-6061.

"If we don't take care of our agricultural industry, not only the whole country, the whole world is hurting," said Vickers.
