CHENANGO COUNTY – According to the Chenango County Emergency Management Center, the county could receive between five to nine inches of snow and sleet between tonight and tomorrow morning.
Chenango County Emergency Management Director A. Wesley Jones said the biggest question for tonight's snow is, "How much mixed precipitation will we get?"
According to Jones, Chenango County may receive between five to nine inches of snow starting at 5 p.m. today and ending around 10 a.m. Friday morning.
"During that time, the county will likely receive periods of heavy snowfall, along with freezing rain or sleet," said Jones.
He said things may be especially difficult for those who have to travel in the morning, with road conditions that are icy with heavy snow.
"During the periods of heavy snow, there still a lot of trees with leaves on them that may fall over – taking out power lines," said Jones. "Those who have to drive in the upcoming weather should try to do so as calmly and safely as they can."
Safe driving
According to Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, the key to staying safe in inclement weather conditions is a combination of driver safety skills and vehicle maintenance.
"The biggest and easiest thing people can do to promote a safer commute is to make sure your windshields and mirrors are completely clear of snow, and slow down," said Papelino.
Papelino said by driving slowly a driver gives themselves additional time to correct and avoid driving mistakes, and many people who get into accidents fail to realize that it was caused by excessive speed for the road conditions.
"Besides driving slowly and having a clear windshield, people need to make sure their tires are in good shape," he said.
Papelino said having bald tires on a vehicle may make navigating through snow, slush, or ice difficult even for drivers who have a lot of experience on the road.
"A lot of it is, people get caught up in the slush on the road, and that mixed with driving a little too fast can make them lose control," said Papelino.
Papelino said lack of attention while driving is another major cause of motor vehicle accidents.
"Drivers need to be attentive to their driving, don't answer phone calls or texts, especially when you're driving in poor conditions," he said.
How to get help
Papelino said if a driver does get into an accident they should reach-out to 911 immediately, and begin to take precautions to keep themselves safe.
"If you crash, call 911, try to stay warm, watch your surroundings, and make a determination on if you should remain in your vehicle for additional protection from the weather," he said. "If a driver is sitting in the middle of route 12, and its snowing like crazy with traffic flying by, they have to make a decision on if they're going to stay in the vehicle or leave."
Papelino said if he were in that situation, he would leave the vehicle and move to safety to wait for help to arrive.
"The easiest way to avoid getting into an accident is to stay home, but for those who can't, make sure your vehicle is ready for the snow and drive slow," said Papelino.
