Brindisi's lead grows as counties count absentee votes

NEW YORK STATE – After five out of eight counties in the 22nd Congressional District finished counting absentee ballots for the 2018 midterm elections on Friday, Anthony Brindisi's lead over Claudia Tenney has grown to 3,223 votes, doubling his lead after election night.

After election night the margin separating Brindisi and Tenney was around 1,500 votes. Tenney now needs to receive 78 percent of remaining absentee ballot votes in Chenango, Oneida, and Tioga counties to win as they finish counting this week.

Chenango County Board of Elections began counting absentee ballots on Friday and election officials say they're about halfway done. They expect to finish counting absentee ballots for the 22nd Congressional race on Monday.

So far Brindisi has received more absentee ballot votes than Tenney in Broome (2,959 to 1,640), Cortland (612 to 405), Herkimer (659 to 579), and Madison (1,063 to 739) counties. Tenney received the majority of absentee ballot votes in Oswego County (484 to 359).

Chenango, Oneida, and Tioga counties are expected to finish counting absentee ballots this week. Remaining absentee ballots to be counted include 1,153 returned in Chenango County, 4,182 returned in Oneida County, and 203 returned in Tioga County.

Campaign manager for Anthony Brindisi, Ellen Foster said Friday in a statement, “The ballots counted this week confirm what we saw on election night. Voters across the 22nd district wanted change, and they chose an independent voice who will work for them in Washington. Throughout the vote counting process we’ve only expanded our lead [sic] it’s clear that Anthony Brindisi has won a decisive victory.”
