Chobani Foundation aims to improve childhood nutrition in Chenango

CHENANGO COUNTY – On Monday the Chobani Foundation announced a partnership with Wholesome Wave to help improve childhood nutrition in Chenango County and Twin Falls, Idaho.

Together, the Chobani Foundation and Wholesome Wave aim to address the challenge of access to quality, nutritious food by providing free fresh fruits and vegetables for six months to local families.

The Wholesome Wave partnership aligns with the Chobani Foundation’s long-standing commitment to improve childhood nutrition and wellness nationally, and its strong belief that naturally delicious and nutritious food should be accessible to everyone.

The Chobani Foundation & Wholesome Wave partnership includes:

• 150 families in Chenango county and 150 families in Twin Falls will receive $60 per month to purchase fruit and vegetables through a reloadable Wholesome Wave Rewards card.

• Recipient families can use their cards, which work like a debit card, at participating local retailers.

• This program is made possible through the Wholesome Rx Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, which provides free, fresh produce to families who have children that are at-risk due to diet-related disease or food insecurity.

• Chobani is also providing these families six months of free yogurt to supplement their new fruit and vegetable purchases. This includes providing recipe cards for healthy cooking options that combine those ingredients – including spreads, soups and smoothies.

Wholesome Wave is the ideal partner for this partnership as it is a national nonprofit organization that empowers underserved consumers to make better food choices by increasing affordable access to healthy produce. James Beard Award-winning Chef Michel Nischan founded Wholesome Wave in 2007 in the belief that poverty should never be an obstacle to eating fruits and vegetables in underserved communities across the country.

“We are honored to partner with the Chobani Foundation on two new Wholesome Rx initiatives,” commented Nischan. “Produce has the power to change lives. It changes the lives of my sons with Type 1 Diabetes. When food-insecure families receive actual prescriptions for free fruits and vegetables, it can change their lives too.”

The partnership with Wholesome Wave is the latest program by the Chobani Foundation to make healthy food more accessible to youth and underserved communities. Other initiatives include:

• Supporting Apple Seeds’ new teaching kitchen in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

• Building a student-run greenhouse with fresh produce at Sherburne-Earlville Central School.

• Support to W.M. Irvin Elementary in Concord, North Carolina to expand its nutritional BackPack program and to establish a healthy food bank for families in need.

• Supporting New York Botanical Garden’s Edible Academy project by helping to double the number of underserved youth in the region who benefit from access to fresh produce & education through its program.

• Partnering with Save the Children by donating financial resources and Chobani Kids and Chobani Tots to help feed thousands of students in Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Arkansas and Louisiana.
