Lane’s 25 points help Marauders pick up 1st win of season

SHERBURNE – Despite seeing pressure early on, the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders cruised to a 58-39 win over Waterville to open their 2018-2019 boys basketball season on Monday.
The Marauders’ Hunter Lane picked up where he left off last season by dropping a game-high 25 points in the win. His teammate Gabe Irwin dished out seven assists in the game while Noah Posson pulled down nine boards.
Sherburne-Earlville saw a full-court press defense by the Waterville Indians. Having little to no problems against the pressuring Indians, S-E jumped out to an early 17-8 lead after the first quarter with Lane scoring nine.
Waterville’s Tyler Jones poured in six points and the Indians’ defense pushed back, limiting the Marauders’ to seven points in the second. The Waterville comeback in the second stanza brought the visiting team within three points at the halftime break.
Sherburne-Earlville took over with their stymie man-to-man defense as they extended their lead in the third to eight points.
To close out the final quarter of play, the Marauders went on a 21-10 run as they received nine points from Lane, four points from Posson, a three from Ryan Asma and five points from Robert Hill.
Posson chipped in eight points to go along with his rebound total while Asma finished with six and Hill ended the night with seven. Irwin added eight to his stat line as well.
Waterville’s Dawson Williams finished with a team-high 10 points in the loss.
The Marauders (1-0) will see Oxford next as a part of the Sherburne-Earlville Boys Basketball Tip-Off Tournament Friday night. The two Chenango County teams face-off at 7:30 p.m. with Cooperstown and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill to play starting at 6 p.m.
The winners of the two games on Friday will meet Saturday at 7 p.m. for the championship game while the consolation game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m.
All games for the tip-off tournament will take place at the Sherburne-Earlville High School game with the junior varsity teams to play in the middle school.
