SUNY Morrisville to sponsor "Die Well: Live Well––A Grief Conference in Four Parts"

NORWICH – SUNY Morrisville's Human Services Institute will hold a grief conference on December 14 in collaboration with Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County and Wilson Funeral Home to better prepare people for grief associated with sickness and death.

Titled "Die Will: Live Well––A Grief Conference in Four Parts," the conference from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. will see presentations by John Gawronski and John Antonowicz of the Wilson Funeral Home, Kendall Drexler of Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County, Dr. Julanne Burton of SUNY Morrisville's Human Service Program, and Rev. Matthew Binkewicz of Finger Lakes Pastoral Services.

Burton said, "The goal of the grief conference is to help people understand that part of living well is having less stress related to planning either as a result of a serious illness or as a result of death."

Check in will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 14 at the SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus community room before Gawronski and Antonowicz present "Funeral Planning: Dispel the Myths; Give the Gift" from 10 to 11 a.m.

Gawronski is a licensed funeral director who has assisted families through his work at Wilson Funeral Home since 2009 before becoming owner of the funeral home in 2017.

Antonowicz has served families at Wilson Funeral Home since 2014, and was licensed as a funeral director in 2017. He also serves on the boards of Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County, Chenango Historical Society, Chenango United Way, and Chenango Valley Home & Apartments.

From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Drexler will present "The 5 Wishes: Preparing for a Good Death." She became Executive Director of Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County in 2017 and is also an adjunct instructor in the Human Service Program at SUNY Morrisville.

Burton will present "Lessons from a Lion-Tamer: Experiences in the Treatment of Complicated Grief" from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. Burton is an assistant professor of social science and coordinator of the Human Service Program at SUNY Morrisville where she teaches courses on counseling, administration, psychology, death and dying.

"We want to offer those attending the benefit of hearing from local experts in the field on ways that individuals may continue to live well despite the difficulty and sadness leading up to or following the loss of a loved one," said Burton

Binkewicz will present "Presence and Purpose: What Truly Matters as End of Life Approaches" from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. to close out the conference. Currently the Bereavement and Pastoral Care Coordinator at Hospice of the Finger Lakes, Binkewicz has nearly 25 years experience in end of life care.

In addition to penning articles dealing with death and dying, Binkewicz has also written several books, Peaceful Journey: A Hospice Chaplain’s Guide to End of Life (2005), Spiritual Care Companion (2007), and Prayers and Consolation for the Bereaved (2010).

Burton said the conference will address questions such as, "We know we are all going to die, so how do we want to live the best life we can? And how can planning or at the very least having knowledge of the death and dying and grief and loss process help them live a better life?"

There is a cost to attend the conference and individuals can register by contacting SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus Director Lindsey Lefevre by emailing lefevrelg@morrisville.edu. A catered lunch will be provided by Wild Owl Cafe from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

SUNY Morrisville's Norwich Campus is located at 20 Conkey Avenue.
