Storm take third in STOP DWI Holiday Classic Division-II bracket; Jackson becomes UV’s all-time leader with 51 points

BINGHAMTON – The Seton Catholic Central Saints fought from Unadilla Valley’s five point advantage in the third quarter to take the lead. For the remainder of the STOP DWI Winter Classic Division-II semifinal game, the two teams battled until two free throws by Marcus Dyes gave the Saints the final lead of the game as they went on to win 54-53 Friday night.
The Storm’s Andrew Jackson took a contested look from about 15 feet as time expired but his jumper missed to hand UV a tough loss on the first night of the weekend.
Unadilla Valley took a 53-52 lead with 27 seconds remaining in the game when Wyatt Grey finished a layup.
Dyes two made foul shots came after a Saints missed shot from the corner led to an offensive rebound and put back attempt by the Seton stand-out. Dyes missed the layup but was fouled, sending him to line with 5.8 seconds remaining.
Trailing by five out of the halftime break, UV’s Jackson tallied nine points in first four minutes of the second half, all which came from behind the 3-point arc. His final 3-pointer came with 4:16 left in the third quarter and gave the Storm it’s first lead of the game.
Unadilla Valley continued to build on their lead and with 1:55 left in the third as Levi Rifanburg scored from inside the paint to make the score 44-39.
The Saints answered with a small run before the end of the quarter to tie the ball game up at 44-44 at the start of the final stanza.
The Storm quickly took the lead in the fourth, but a Tyler Rumpel 3-pointer gave Seton the lead once again. Rumpel’s teammate Tommy Dempsey knocked down almost the exact same shot to extend the Saints lead to six points before UV closed the gap and eventually took the lead on Grey’s bucket late in the quarter.
The next afternoon, Unadilla Valley rebounded nicely, taking the win over Susquehanna Valley, 59-48.
After trailing for the majority of the first quarter, the Storm settled in and took a 13-12 with 13 seconds left in opening eight minutes of play. Once UV gained the lead, they never lost it again.
Jackson put up 25 in the third place game and with his points over the weekend, he become the all-time leading scorer at Unadilla Valley.
Jackson needed 48 points at the start of the season to overcome Justin Hofer, who has held the record since 2013 with 1,170. Jackson’s total is currently 1,173 point from his career and will have the rest of his senior season to add to it. He finished the weekend with 17 rebounds and eight assists
Rifanburg had a big day in the win over the Sabers also as he recorded a double-double. He pulled down 15 rebounds and chipped in 14 points Saturday afternoon. Their teammate Grey totaled 21 points over the weekend.
Unadilla Valley (1-1) is in action next on Tuesday when they travel to Cooperstown. Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
