MVP Lambert leads Cooperstown to win over Marauders in S-E Tip-off championship
SHERBURNE – A 20 point fourth quarter by the Cooperstown Hawkeyes led them to the 63-54 victory over tournament host Sherburne-Earlville on Saturday night. Cooperstown’s Jack Lambert paced his team over the first 24 minutes of play, tallying 26 of his 29 points.
While the Marauders found a way to shut down Lambert in the final quarter, Ryan Lansing, Calvin Sandler and Noah Lifgren were big from the foul line as the three led the Hawkeyes to the win. Cooperstown shot 9-for-12 from charity stripe with Lifgren going 6-for-8 himself.
Sherburne-Earlville held a one point margin at the end of the first half. Battling in the third quarter, the two teams went back and forth until the Hawkeyes took the one point lead at the end of the stanza.
In the fourth, Sandler hit the opening bucket to extend his team’s edge to three points. S-E’s Hunter Lane answered with back-to-back and-1 plays, giving the advantage back to the host Marauders. Lansing hit a deep three ball to give Cooperstown the lead for good.
Lifgren added a basket from the floor to give him eight points in the quarter and the game while Sandler finished with 12 for the contest. Lansing chipped in 10 and Lambert had the team-high with his point total.
The Marauders were led by Lane, who ended the night with a game-high 31 points. Gabe Irwin added 10 while Robert Hill tallied seven in the loss.
Lambert received the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player award while teammate Lifgren earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Lane and Irwin were named to the All-Tournament team for the Marauders.
In the consolation game, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill topped the Oxford Blackhawks 47-40. Oxford led after the first quarter, 12-6 but the Red Devils shut down the Blackhawks in the second stanza.
VVS limited Oxford to one made field goal and one made free-throw in the defensive end of the floor. On offense, the Red Devils scored 18 points to go into the intermission leading by nine.
Following halftime, Oxford shifted the momentum into their favor as they put 13 up on the scoreboard while holding VVS to seven points. Their third quarter spurt brought them within three but the Red Devils once again held the advantage in the final eight minutes, scoring 16 to the Blackhawks’ 12.
VVS was led by Phoenix Weydig’s 17, aiding in his All-Tournament team nod. Teammate Jacob Horodnick added 11.
Oxford’s Jason Davis recorded a game-high 22 points in the loss. Davis also received All-Tournament team honors.
Friday night, Sherburne-Earlville defeated the Oxford Blackhawks in the second of the first round games, 47-27.
The Marauders defense shut down the Blackhawks by not allowing the Chenango County foe to more than nine points in any of the four quarters. S-E limited Oxford’s leading scorer, Davis, allowing just seven points on the night.
The Blackhawks did hold a two point advantage after the first half but the Marauders came out on fire in the second, scoring 22 in the third. Lane led the way with nine and teammate Noah Posson added eight, totaling 17 of the point in the eight minute stretch. Oxford was held to 10 point for the entire second half.
Lane finished with a game-high 25 points.
The other first round matchup saw Cooperstown’s Lambert score 34 points as the Hawkeyes topped Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, 63-61.

The Marauders have several days to rest as their next game isn’t until Friday. They will travel to Adirondack for a 7:30 p.m. game, the first league game of the season. The Blackhawks host Morris for a non-league contest at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
