Tornado wrestlers dealt heartbreaking loss to Windsor
WINDSOR – In their first dual meet of the season, the Norwich Purple Tornado Wrestling team took on divisional opponent, the Windsor Black Knights. Coming down to the last two matches of the night, Norwich was handed a tough loss by the Black Knights with a final of 38-32.
Windsor quickly got off to a 10 point start but the Tornado’s Mikey Squires bumped up a weight class to 160 pounds and ended the shut out early when he pinned James Hoover of the Black Knights, putting six on the board for Norwich.
The Tornado’s next win came from Angel Francis at the 182 pound match. Francis, who is coming off a strong third place performance at the Clyde Cole Tournament, needed overtime to win his match. Against Davis Flora of Windsor, Francis stole the win in overtime with a decision victory of 2-1 and helped by chipping three more points off the Black Knights lead.
Windsor took the next two match – one by a 5-0 decision and the other was a forfeit in the 220 pound match.
Tyler Rice, the Purple Tornado’s 285 pounder wrestler and the top wrestler in Section IV at that weight, needed just 2:35 to earn another six points for his team as her pinned Windsor’s Camdyn Adams.
Following Rice’s win, Norwich won three straight matches and closed the once 17 point Black Knights’ lead to down to just three.
Dante Geislinger was the first of the three consecutive wins, pinning his opponent in 34 seconds. Geislinger improved to 5-0 on the year. The 2017 New York State Champion has won all but one of his his matches by a pin this season.
Fresh off his exciting overtime win and 120 pound Clyde Cole title, Andrew Brown of the Purple Tornado took a major decision win over Windsor’s Ryan Kennedy. With a final score of 10-2 in the match, Brown added four points to the Norwich tally and helped chip away at the lead Windsor created earlier in the match.
His teammate Nick Glanville also won with a major decision outcome, using a 15-1 score to beat the Black Knights’ Dante Rooke. His win brought the match to the three point margin with just two weight classes remaining in the STAC Divisional contest.
In the 132 pound match, Norwich’s Ben Glanville met Windsor’s Mike Daniels on the mat. Battling through the second period, Daniels came away with the win in the match by pinning Ben Glanville.
As the Black Knights added six points to the total, their lead extended to nine points. With just one match remaining, Windsor secured the victory as there was no way Norwich could come back.
Knowing this, the Purple Tornado’s Izaiah Cabalero –who also had a great Clyde Cole showing – still went out to the mat and gave it everything he had against the Black Knight’s Deekon Flint. Cabalero walked away with a 12-6 decision win to end the match on a high note for Norwich.
The Tornado head to Ilion Friday and Saturday for the Valley Duals tournament, hosted by Section III’s Central Valley Academy. Wrestling action is scheduled to start Friday night and continue Saturday.
