BGAH wrestling takes home 2nd place from Viking Duals

OTSELIC – The Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville (BGAH) Bears Wrestling finished second as they went 4-1 Saturday at the fifth annual Vikings Duals at Otselic Valley, their only loss coming against tournament champion Windsor. The Greene/Oxford placed fourth with their 2-3 record and the Vikings ended the day at 0-5.
In the Bears match against Greene/Oxford, BGAH saw five pinfalls to win 57-20. Rocco Arduini pinned G/O’s Abram Parsons at 220 pounds in 1:33 to start the match. Jacob Terpstra needed just 55 seconds to win the 113 pound bout against Jacob Titus.
The third pin of the match was awarded to BGAH’s 138 pound wrestler Brody Oleksak, taking down Hogan Ludolph to the mat and pinning him at the 3:15 mark of the match and Austin Eggleston of the Bears pinned Greene/Oxford’s Jon Thurston at 182 in 27 seconds.
Breaking up Noah Kennedy of Greene/Oxford perfect start to the season, BGAH’s Shane Hoover won by pinfall at 5:30 to stay undefeated.
The Bears’ Joey Florence (99), Brady Buttice (145) and Zach Gardepe (152) won their matches by decision while BGAH won three other weight classes by forfeits.
In the same match, Greene/Oxford’s Brady Smith started of his strong tournament performance with a tech fall win over BGAH’s Dylan Decker.
Prior to Smith’s victory, teammate Tyler Brown pinned the Bears Wayne Lewis. Damien Hitt won the third straight bout in the match when he defeated BGAH’s Trevor Ross. At 106 pounds, Sean Powers of Greene/Oxford earned the first win for the team when he pulled out a 6-5 decision win.
BGAH defeated Port Byron by 57 points as the team saw eight of their bouts end with pinfalls wins. The Bears also defeated Homer by 17, and topped Otselic Valley, 71-15. In the match against the Vikings, BGAH earns seven wins because of forfeits due to the small roster of OV.
Greene/Oxford’s wins in the duals came against the Vikings and Port Byron. The final score of 52-24 against Otselic Valley saw 126 pounder Lyric Libbey pin OV’s Chyenne Remillard in 27 seconds and Noah Kennedy take down Jolanda Ponce to the mat and win with a 32 second fall. Their teammate Paul Baker won with a 13-1 major decision, earning four points for his team in the match. At 99 pounds, Owen Marcin of the G/O team won with a pin in the third period, defeating OV’s Jacob Hackett nine seconds before the buzzer sounded.
The Vikings earned their 18 of the team’s 24 points by three of their wrestlers earning pins over their opponents in the match. Benjamin Craft won with a 1:13 fall, Dakota Hackett pinned Damien Hitt in the second period and Ashvil Rood defeated Abram Parsons at the 3:34 mark. OV’s final six points in the match came from a forfeit win for Dougherty.
Despite not winning a match, Otselic Valley battled with each team and saw stand-out performances by Hackett and Dougherty. Hackett went 3-1 on the day at 138 pounds and his three wins came by a pinfall, a 7-6 decision win and an injury forfeit. Dougherty, OV’s 285 pounder won three of four matches by pinning his opponent.
Greene/Oxford’s Smith finished perfect for the tournament, winning all four of his matches he wrestled. His four wins came with two pinfalls and two tech falls.
Kennedy went 2-1 on the day, his only loss coming to BGAH. Both of his victories came by pins, including the fall in :32 against OV.
Hitt went 3-2 on the day at 132 and 138 pounds. His three match wins were won by pins, all coming in the early period.
Also having a great day for the Greene/Oxford was Kaden Wakefield. The 99 pounder for G/O finished his tournament with a 3-1 record – two pins and a 11-4 decision win.
BGAH and Greene/Oxford are on the mats again Wednesday evenings. The Bears will travel to face Walton-Delhi while G/O host Deposit-Hancock. Both matches are scheduled for a 6 p.m. start time.
