NORWICH – The third annual Toys for Tots Spaghetti Supper Benefit at Colonia Theater last Wednesday raised $1,300 and about 3,700 toys to be donated to Chenango County children this Christmas.
Event chairman Lon Yerton said he was pleased with the turnout on Wednesday, calling it a "huge success."
"What was so good about the event was people did more than just follow the guidelines of one toy and seven bucks, many people donated several toys and more cash than $7," said Yerton. "The overwhelming generosity of Chenango County residents helped make it a great success."
Patrons at the benefit were served a spaghetti supper and had the option to watch either Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas or The Cat in the Hat in one of the theaters after dinner.
Princess Belle and her Prince made a guest appearance at the supper, along with The Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2, and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus.
This year's benefit raised $300 more and 200 more toys than the 2017 event, the latter of which was the first at Colonia Theater and Yerton's first as event chairman. The 2017 Toys for Tots Spaghetti Supper Benefit raised 3,500 toys and $1,000, doubling the proceeds from the first spaghetti supper benefit in 2016, Yerton said.
All of the toys donated at the benefit will be gifted to children in Chenango County enrolled in Toys for Tots, and the money raised will be used to buy more toys.
Yerton said organizers were banking on a big turnout this year to help raise funds to fill the void left by the closing of all Toys "R" Us stores, which used to sell toys at a discounted price to organizations who were buying for Toys for Tots. Without buying from Toys "R" Us, the expense for purchasing toys at other locations will be more than in year's past.
It's not too late to donate toys or funds to the local chapter of the Marine Toys for Tots program. Yerton said toys can be dropped off at Nina's Pizzeria and Restaurant or St. Bartholomew Church.
Yerton extended his thanks to the Barnes family for donating the use of Colonia Theater, as well as to all sponsors for making the event possible.
