SHERBURNE – Canastota jumped out to a 18-0 lead after the first three bouts in the Section III wrestling match as the host Marauders have limited numbers this season, resulting in forfeits for several weight classes. The visiting Raiders won the match 66-17 Tuesday night.
Sherburne-Earlville did pick up wins at 145 pounds, 182 pounds and 220 pounds to score their 17 point in the dual meet.
At 182 pounds, S-E’s Ethan Eldred saw his first action on the match since his ankle injury at Clyde Cole a few weeks ago and it looked as if their was no injury at all. Eldred landed a shot against Canastota’s Kaleb Blowers early in the first period, taking his opponent down the mat where the two wrestlers remained their for the rest of the match.
Eldred earned several back points before eventually pinning Blowers at the 1:07 mark of the first period, picking up six points in the meet.
The Marauders’ Morgan Lakin earned his team’s first win of the night with a 17-0 tech fall in the second period of the 145 pound bout. Taking on Canastota’s Jake Backus, Lakin brought the match to mat early as he landed a shot against his opponent.
For most of the match, Lakin was in the top position and had Backus in a hold that led to back points. Backus avoided the pin by continuing to scramble on the mat.
The two headed into the second period with Lakin starting in the down position but reversed Backus back down to the mat to once again have his opponent nearly pinned. Lakin finished the match with three back points after a five second count, earning five points towards S-E’s team total.
Alex Thompson, Sherburne-Earlville’s 220 pounder earned his win by forfeit to give the home team their 17 points scored in the meet.
Selina Moore, Connor Foster, Tegan Campbell and Chyle Foster all wrestled for the Marauders in their respective weight classes but ended with a loss by pinfall to their Canastota opponents.
Sherburne-Earlville travels to Dolgeville for their next match on Tuesday, December 18. Action on the mat is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
