UV votes on $10 million budget proposal
NEW BERLIN – The Unadilla Valley School District’s Board of Education is scheduled to vote on its upcoming budget proposal on December 13.
According to school officials, the project would be funded largely through state aid, with support from a reserve fund. The vote will be held between noon and 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13 in the District Office Lobby.
School officials said the proposed project would involve a roof replacement over portions of the building, masonry restoration, HVAC upgrades, paving and sidewalk replacement and athletic field improvements.
“Many components of the project are related to increasing energy efficiency at the school building and ensuring the school’s facilities remain a modern, comfortable and safe place in which to learn and work,” stated officials. “The bulk of the project will be funded by state aid, along with a distribution of up to $1.8 million from the district’s Capital Reserve Fund.”
If the budget is approved by voters, officials said the project is tentatively slated to begin in spring 2020.
“There should be no impact as far as taxes on this,” said Unadilla Valley School District Superintendent Robert Mackey. “The work outside on our track and football field should be an aid-able expenditure along with the work we’re doing on the inside of the building.”
He said the vote is scheduled for December because it can take more than a year for the New York State Education Department to approve building projects after they are passed by voters, and in addition, the bidding process can be lengthy.
“Putting the project out for vote now, when the designs and plans are established according to current cost estimates, could also help keep the project under budget and less susceptible to inflationary pressures,” said Mackey.
Unadilla Valley School District Head Maintenance Mechanic Bill Beadle also spoke on the budget and maintenance that needs to be done on the blacktop throughout the school’s parking lots.
“A lot of the seams in the blacktop are deteriorating,” said Beadle. “Under one of our parking lots is the cover to our geothermal field.”
He said it’s important that the school keep its parking lot in good shape to help protect its wells.
