NORWICH – The Norwich Purple Tornado received seven wins in the match due to forfeits by the Chenango Valley Warriors, providing a large cushion in Wednesday’s STAC Division 3 dual meet while the action on the mat by the Tornado wrestlers aided in the 27 point win.
As the match started at 195 pounds, Norwich’s Dakota Hall immediately took control, earning two points with the first period takedown against Chenango Valley’s Anthony Holt. Hall held the 2-0 score through the first and into the second.
Holt took the top position to start the second period. The CV wrestler held the top spot for a portion of the period until Hall made his move to earn a reversal for another two points, extending his lead to 4-0. That move put on by the Tornado 195 pounder led to a pin just a few seconds later, giving Norwich a 6-0 advantage to start the match.
The Tornado forfeited the 220 pound match but immediately gained the points back after the Warriors also gave a forfeit to Norwich at 285 pounds.
At 99 pounds, Norwich’s Max Morris received a 6-3 decision win. Morris started the bout off with an early takedown after he completed his shot on CV’s Trevor Cortright, earning a 2-0 lead.
Taking his 2-0 lead into the second period, Morris chose to start on the bottom. Quickly making his move on Cortright, Morris reversed into the top position and picked up another two points.
Cortright, however, responded and reversed the position back to make the score 4-2 at the end of the second period. To start the third, Cortright chose the bottom spot but Morris gave up the escape point to go neutral.
His decision for the position paid off as Morris was able to land his shot for the two point takedown, earning the win after the third period.
Norwich forfeited at 106 pounds but once again earned the six points given right back after the Warriors didn’t send anyone to the mat at 113 pounds. The Purple Tornado then received forfeit points for the 120, 126 and 132 pound matches, giving the home team a 27 point lead.
Chenango Valley’s Nate Lehr earned six points back for the Warriors after winning his 138 pound bout by pinfall, defeating Norwich’s Izaiah Caballero at 2:36.
Once again, the Tornado answered as their 145 pounder Ashton Jenkins picked up his fourth pin of the season, beating CV’s Josh Champion at the 2:51 mark of the match.
Jenkins took the early lead in the match with his takedown in the first period. His next move landed Champion on his back and Jenkins picked up three more points with his five count. Before the end of the first period, Jenkins added another near fall five count to lead 8-0 after the two minutes of wrestling.
With it being Champion’s choice for position, the Warriors’ wrestler decided neutral. Playing into Jenkins’ cards with the choice, the Norwich wrestler earned a takedown and made his move to earn the pinfall victory.
Chenango Valley’s Colsten Volpe picked up a pinfall win for his team, pinning the Tornado’s Dakota Powers at 1:49 in the first period.
Norwich earned another win at 160 pounds due to forfeit, leaving two matches for the rest of the meet.
Bumping up two weight classes, the Tornado’s Mikey Squires took on the Warriors’ Brady Hope. Starting off the match with a takedown, Squires looked to be in control in the early part of the match.
In the second period, Hope chose to start on the bottom and Squires took advantage as he nearly landed the pinfall. Picking up three points instead with a five count, the Tornado wrestler led 5-0 heading into the final two minutes of wrestling.
Squires started the third on bottom but quickly reversed out of it, earning another two points to give him a score of 7-0. Not allowing Hope to score a single point in the remaining time, Squires went on to pick up a decision win by the same tally.
In the final match of the night, Norwich’s Angel Francis was able to escape three times over the six minutes of match time but Nate Aylward received a 7-3 decision win with his three takedowns and one escape in the bout.
The Purple Tornado are off until Wednesday, December 19 when they host Chenango Forks. The team will then travel to Bainbridge-Guilford the next day to take on the Bears of BGAH in a non-league but heavily anticipated dual meet between the two Chenango County teams. The divisional meet against Forks is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. while Thursday’s action is slated for 6 p.m.
