BGAH Bears earn big road win on the mat

WALTON – Winning seven bouts in the match, four by pinfall, the Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville (BGAH) Bears defeated Walton/Delhi on the road Wednesday night by a final of 45-27.
The dual meet started with the 152-pound weight class, resulting in a major decision win by Walton/Delhi’s Will Pettit. His four point win was the one and only lead of the night for the host team as BGAH won the next four, building a large lead en route to an 18 point win.
BGAH wrestlers took the next four with pins by Zach Gardepe at 160, Hayden Lewis at 170, Shane Hoover at 182, and Rocco Arduini at 220. Both the Bears 195 pounder Austin Eggleston and 285 pound wrestler Timmy James received a forfeit in their matches, adding another 12 points to the team score. With the four pinfall wins and two forfeits in their favor, BGAH took a 36-4 lead.
The Bears’ 99 pound Joey Florance earned a 5-0 decision win over Walton/Delhi’s Noah Sovocool and teammate Jose Bivar picked up a 13-7 decision at the 106 pound bout, defeating W/D’s Borck Mattice.
The next four matches went to the host team as Nate Merwin won 5-0 and Cody Merwin picked up a techfall. The 126 pound and 132 pound bouts went to Walton/Delhi with forfeits by the Bears.
Moving up from 132 pounds, Walton/Delhi’s stand-out Chandler Merwin moved up a weight class to wrestle BGAH’s Brody Oleksak at 138. With unbeaten records on the line, Oleksak and Merwin wrestled through the three periods of regulation and four overtime sessions to determine a winner.
In the 30 second ultimate tie-breaker overtime, Oleksak escaped the grasp of Merwin to earn the exciting win and remain perfect on the season.
Also bumping up a class, Nick Lamoreaux of W/D moved from 138 to 145 pounds to face the Bears’ Brady Buttice.
The two wrestlers also went into an overtime period but it was Lamoreaux who captured the win as he earned a takedown in the extra time to earn a 7-5 decision win.
BGAH heads to Burnt Hills Saturday as they participate in the Lee Van Slyke Memorial Duals Tournament. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. at Burnt Hills High School.
