Suspected drug dealer jumps through window to escape police raid

NORWICH – Law enforcement executed a no-knock search warrant in the City of Norwich yesterday morning that lead to the seizure of narcotics, a handgun, and over $35,000 cash after a two month long investigation. Court records show one of the individuals charged has previously been convicted of similar crimes in Chenango County.

The investigation was a joint operation between the Norwich PD, Chenango County Sheriff's Office, and state police.

Corey A. Weidman, 34, and Cheyanne D. Moore, 22, both of 93 East Main Street Apartment 1F in Norwich, have been charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminal possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful possession of a firearm, after police conducted a search of their apartment.

Weidman has previously been arrested for possessing an illegal handgun and selling drugs in 2007.

According to Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting, after searching the location police discovered approximately 1.8 kilograms (approximately four pounds) of crystal methamphetamine, 3 ounces of cocaine, 4.5 ounces of marihuana and other drugs including, LSD, MDMA, and Suboxone strips. Police also recovered approximately $35,625 in cash, a loaded handgun, and seized a 2004 Honda Civic.

According to City of Norwich Assistant Police Chief Scott Burlison police entered a Norwich residence at 93 East Main Street, at 5:30 a.m., Monday as part of a search warrant.

Burlison said the raid was the result of a two month long investigation into drug sales inside Chenango County.

Failed window escape

According to police, Weidman attempted to flee during the raid and jumped through a first story window. However, he suffered several injuries as a result and was immediately apprehended by police who were already stationed outside. He later received treatment for a number of lacerations.

"Weidman was taken into custody, treated at the scene by Norwich EMS, and transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital for injuries he sustained from broken glass," said Burlison.

He said Norwich Police Department Detective Sgt. Reuban Roach was in contact with the sheriff's office throughout the investigation, and the Norwich Police Department assisted with traffic control, defendant transportation, the recovery of evidence, and with holding the perimeter while state police executed the search warrant.

"I've been doing this for nearly 30 years, and this raid resulted in the highest variety of drugs I've seen for single operation in this area," said Burlison. "It was a good working effort between each office, working as a joint team to get the narcotics off the street and out of our community."

Both defendants were arraigned in Chenango County Court by Judge Frank Revoir Jr., and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility. Weidman’s bail has been set at $100,000 cash and Moore’s has been set at $50,000 cash.

Burlison said, "When detectives are building a case like this, they know it's important to look at the individual's criminal history."

Previous arrests

According to court records, this isn't the first time Weidman has faced drug charges.

On October 22, 2007 Weidman pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, and received nine years in state prison.

The sentencing judge at that time, W. Howard Sullivan said Weidman had an opportunity to go to rehabilitation, but failed during treatment.

“We have a history. You went through drug treatment court, and we couldn’t pressure you to change persons, places and things. Because you stuck to that lifestyle, you are going to prison. You let your parents down, you let yourself down, and you let all of the rest of us down,” said Sullivan.

Weidman pleaded guilty in 2005 to fifth-degree attempted sale of a controlled substance, after selling cocaine from his parents home where he lived. He was still on probation for that charge when arrested in 2007.

At that time law enforcement executed a “no knock” search warrant at Weidman’s residence. Police discovered approximately one ounce of processed cocaine with a street value of about $1,500. Police also confiscated an illegally owned .22 caliber revolver handgun, a switch blade knife and assorted drug paraphernalia.

Weidman is scheduled to appear in Norwich City Court on Thursday for his most recent charges.
