S-E and Norwich saw several top 10 finishers at the John DiMao Invitational; 4 new Tornado school records set
HAMILTON – Two Norwich Indoor Track records were broken while two more were set on Tuesday at the John DiMao Memorial Invitational, held at Colgate University. Both the Purple Tornado and the Sherburne-Earlville indoor track teams competed in the meet.
The Norwich 4x200 meter relay team of David Berger, Eric Conant, Nik Barber and Gabe Gawronski topped the record they set a year ago by a half of a second, taking first place in the boys division-I race with a time of 1:34.72. Their finish was three seconds faster than the second place team from Cazenovia.
Unlike the boys team which has competed together for over a year now, the girls 4x200 for Norwich ran together for the first time. Katie Gawronski, Lucie Martin, Angela Carlson and Riley Marsh crossed the finish line with a time of 1:57.26 for second place in the event. With their time, the foursome were two seconds away from breaking the school record set in 2016.
The Purple Tornado’s Katie Gawronski broke a five year old record by more than 10 seconds. The record was held by Kristen Slate at 2:41.3 prior to Tuesday, when Katie Gawronksi finished with a time of 2:31.99 and placed third in the event. The winner ran a time of 2:22.68.
Brother Gabe Gawronski placed first and nearly broke Matt Murray’s record in the 800 meter race, finishing with a time of 1:57.73. Murray still holds the school record set five years ago at 1:56.19 but Gabe hopes to take over the record by the end of the indoor track season as he continues to shave time and come closer each meet.
Gabe won the event by more than 20 seconds, with the second place time coming across the finish line at 2:18.32.
In the first time that the race has been run by Tornado runners, both Justin Bates and Lucie Martin set the 500 meter record. Bates now holds the boys record at Norwich with 1:16.56 while Martin holds the record on the girls side with a time of 1:27.29.
The 4x400 meter boys relay team for Norwich came close to breaking another record as Barber, Noah Bufalini, Berger and Conant took second place in the event. The foursome finished with a time of 3:38.44, two seconds shy of the school’s best time.
The Norwich girls 4x400 team also placed second in the race, coming in at a time of 4:35.41. Martin and Katie Gawronski were joined by Shaylee Horton and Erika Berry as the group were five seconds off from the school record.
Both the boys and girls shot put throwers for the Tornado claimed first place in the meet for the division-I portion of the meet. Zach Lowe of Norwich threw a distance of 43 feet-4.25 inches for the top spot on the podium while Shakira Alexander tossed the weight ball 30 feet-7 inches.
The Tornado’s Conant sprinted first place in the 45 meter dash, crossing the finish line at 5.69 seconds and .2 of a second faster than the rest of the field. Berger came in third for the event with a time under six seconds.
Norwich saw athletes place in the top five in eight more events throughout the night.
Sherburne-Earlville competed in the division-II side of the event Tuesday night. Adam Aldrich placed fifth in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:19.84. He also placed in the top 10 for the 45 meter dash while crossing the finish line in sixth place in the 50 meter hurdles.
John Maltzan of the Marauders participated in the field jumping events. He placed fourth with his final height of 5 feet in the high jump and snagged the final spot of the top 10 in the long jump. His teammate, Quinn Furner placed ninth in the shot put event.
S-E’s Hannah Lawrence placed seventh and sixth in her two events on the girls side. In the 500 meter dash, Lawrence crossed the line at 1:39.82. Later in the meet, she stood on the podium for her best of three attempts in the long jump at 12 feet-3.75 inches.
Ivanna Daughterty of the Lady Marauders placed just outside the top 10 in the division-II shot put standings. Her throw of 20 feet-1.5 inches earned the girls three points as a team.
