Norwich man charged with raping young child
NORWICH – A Norwich man was charged with rape on Tuesday after child protective services and police said he sexually assaulted and raped a six-year-old girl.
Jamie Lynn Whitmore Jr., 23, of Norwich was charged with first-degree rape, a class B felony, first-degree criminal sexual act, a class B felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
According to court records, the crime allegedly occurred on November 19, on Borden Avenue, in the City of Norwich.
Records state charges are based on a complaint from Chenango County Child Protective Services and an investigation conducted by members of the Norwich Police Department.
Whitmore pleaded not guilty to the charges in court.
When arraigned in Norwich City Court, Whitmore's attorney, Public Defender John Cameron said that due to the nature of the charges he understood a bail demand made by prosecutors was expected, but he requested that the bail be reasonable and appropriate.
Norwich Police Department Detective Sgt. Reuban Roach said the district attorney's office was requesting $25,000 cash bail because of the severity of the charges.
Norwich City Court Judge Michael Genute remanded Whitmore on $25,000 cash bail, and scheduled a felony hearing on the matter for this Thursday.
